Fragrance note

Jasmine Perfumes

A jasmine perfume is a fragrance with jasmine reigning at its heart – floral, sunny-sweet, slightly fruity and with a sensual, almost animalic depth. The scent of the delicate, hand-picked flowers is usually captured as an absolute; molecules such as benzyl acetate, indole and Hedione carry its character.

Benzyl acetate, indole, Hedione: the molecules in jasmine

Perfumery relies above all on Jasminum grandiflorum and Jasminum sambac. The flowers are picked by hand at dawn, when their scent is strongest; in Grasse the harvest runs from July to October. Around 8,000 flowers make one kilogram, and one litre of absolute takes almost 650 kilograms of flowers – more than five million individual blossoms. Much of the jasmine processed worldwide now comes from Egypt. The scent is shaped by benzyl acetate (C₉H₁₀O₂), indole (C₈H₇N) and jasmonates; the related molecule Hedione (methyl dihydrojasmonate) was developed around 1960 and still makes fragrances radiate today.

In a fragrance, jasmine is light and warmth at once: with citrus and tea it feels fresh and sheer, with rose and orange blossom opulent, with vanilla, amber or sandalwood sensual and made for the evening. Jasmine suits every season – fresh in spring and summer, warm and ambery in autumn and winter.

In this edit, jasmine shapes the fragrance – in its name or as the leading flower in the top and heart notes.

Jasmine with citrus, tea or green notes. Light, radiant and perfect for daytime.

Opulent white florals

Sensual & warm

With vanilla, amber, sandalwood or musk. Soft and seductive, for the evening.

Curious factIndole, a key building block of jasmine, smells faecal at high concentrations – yet floral in tiny doses. It is precisely this tension that makes jasmine so sensual.

Knowledge to share

Myth or truth?

1 / 3

Statement 1

Jasmine is best picked at dawn.

TRUTH

True. That is when the flowers’ scent is strongest – which is why the harvest in Grasse starts at daybreak.

Statement 2

A few thousand flowers are enough for a litre of jasmine absolute.

MYTH

Myth. It takes almost 650 kilograms of flowers – at around 8,000 flowers per kilogram, that is more than five million.

Statement 3

A jasmine molecule smells faecal in high doses.

TRUTH

True. Concentrated indole smells unpleasant, but highly diluted it smells floral – one reason for jasmine’s sensual depth.

Frequently asked questions

Why does jasmine sometimes feel almost animalic?

Mainly because of indole. At high concentrations it smells unpleasant, but in fine doses it gives jasmine depth and sensuality. Perfumers dose this effect deliberately – from clean and bright to intoxicating.

What is the difference between Jasminum grandiflorum and sambac?

Grandiflorum feels elegant, slightly fruity and classic. Sambac smells greener, more intense and somewhat tea-like – it is also used for jasmine tea.

When should I wear a jasmine fragrance?

Bright jasmine scents by day and in spring, opulent and warm versions in the evening and in the colder months. It is best to test it on your own skin: with every bottle from 30 ml, we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
