Fragrance note

Sandalwood Perfumes

A sandalwood perfume is a fragrance whose heart or base rests on sandalwood – creamy, milky-soft, slightly sweet and as warm as polished wood. Natural sandalwood oil is obtained from the heartwood of Santalum trees and consists largely of santalols; perfumers also use modern sandalwood molecules.

Santalol: the molecule behind sandalwood

In classic East Indian sandalwood (Santalum album), only the heartwood is fragrant – and that takes time: the trunk starts to develop its scent at around ten years, and it is ready for harvest after about 20. The oil consists of roughly 80 to 90 per cent α- and β-santalol (C₁₅H₂₄O). Because Santalum album is now classed as vulnerable, Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) and synthetic sandalwood molecules are used as well.

In a fragrance, sandalwood is the great connector: it makes florals velvety, spices rounded and oud softer. With rose and jasmine it feels sensual, with cardamom and saffron spicy and oriental, with vanilla and tonka creamy and gourmand. Sandalwood suits every season, but its warmth unfolds most beautifully in autumn and winter.

In this edit, sandalwood shapes the fragrance – in its name, in the top and heart notes or as a creamy base.

How the note behaves

Creamy & milky

Sandalwood with vanilla, tonka or coconut. Soft and warming, like cashmere on the skin.

Floral & sensual

With rose, jasmine, iris or tuberose. Elegant and powdery, with velvety depth.

Spicy & oriental

With cardamom, saffron, oud or incense. Warm, deep and mysterious.

Curious factSandalwood is a hemiparasite: the tree taps into the roots of other plants to obtain nutrients – up to 300 species can serve as its host. A noble wood that lives partly on others.

Frequently asked questions

Why is genuine sandalwood so precious?

Only the heartwood is fragrant, and a tree needs around 20 years before it can be harvested. East Indian sandalwood is also classed as vulnerable. That is why it is used with care and often complemented by Australian sandalwood or modern sandalwood molecules.

What does sandalwood smell like?

Creamy, soft and slightly sweet, with a milky sheen and a dry woody warmth. It is never loud – it nestles against the skin.

When should I wear a sandalwood fragrance?

All year round: light compositions with florals or citrus by day, creamy and spicy versions in the evening and in the colder months. It is best to test it on your own skin: with every bottle from 30 ml, we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
