What is tourmaline?

The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese “turamali”, and hardly any gemstone occurs in as many colours – from pink to green. With a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is well suited to everyday wear. A curiosity: tourmaline is pyroelectric and becomes electrically charged when warmed; Dutch traders used it to draw ash out of their meerschaum pipes and called it “aschentrekker”.
