What are opal and topaz?

Swiss Blue Topaz shows a bright, radiant sky blue. With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, topaz is a robust gemstone; its name may go back to the island of Topazios in the Red Sea. Opal is more delicate (hardness 5.5–6.5): its play of colour arises because minute spheres of silica diffract the light – which is why it is best protected from knocks, heat and chemicals.
