What are opal and tourmaline?

Inside an opal, minute spheres of silica diffract the light and let it shimmer in every colour; the stone even contains water. With a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, it is best protected from knocks, heat and chemicals. Tourmaline (hardness 7–7.5) takes its name from the Sinhalese “turamali” and occurs in more colours than almost any other gemstone. A curiosity: when warmed, it becomes electrically charged – Dutch traders used it to draw ash out of their meerschaum pipes and called it “aschentrekker”.
