What is tourmaline?

Hardly any gemstone is as many-coloured as tourmaline – its name comes from the Sinhalese “turamali”. Green tourmalines are among its classic colours. Tourmaline is also pyroelectric: once warm, it becomes electrically charged. Dutch traders used it to draw ash out of their pipes, hence the nickname “aschentrekker”. With a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is well suited to everyday wear.
