What is tourmaline?

The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese “turamali”, and hardly any other gemstone appears in so many colours – from delicate pink to rich green. A true curiosity: tourmaline is pyroelectric. When warmed, it becomes electrically charged. Dutch traders used this to draw ash out of their meerschaum pipes and called it “aschentrekker”. Hardness 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
