What is tourmaline?

Tourmaline occurs in more colours than almost any other gemstone; its name derives from the Sinhalese “turamali”. Pink tourmalines are among its most sought-after varieties. And it has an astonishing talent: when warmed, it becomes electrically charged and attracts fine ash – Dutch traders used it to clean their meerschaum pipes and christened it “aschentrekker”. Hardness 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
