What is tourmaline?

The name comes from Sinhalese: “turamali” is what the people of Sri Lanka called colourful gemstones. Hardly any other gemstone occurs in so many colours – from soft pink to deep green. And it has an astonishing talent: when warmed, tourmaline becomes electrically charged. Dutch traders once used it to draw the ash out of their meerschaum pipes and called it “Aschentrekker”. With a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is made for everyday wear.
