What is sapphire?

Sapphire is a corundum and, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, one of the hardest gemstones of all. Many people think of sapphire only in blue – yet it occurs in numerous colours. Sapphires in colours other than blue are called “fancy” sapphires. The stones in this ring come from small-scale mining cooperatives in Sri Lanka, where they are mined and cut under strict environmental and human-rights standards.
