What is rutilated quartz?

Rutilated quartz is a clear quartz in which gossamer-fine crystal needles of rutile (titanium dioxide) became enclosed as it formed. They shimmer golden and lie differently in every stone – no two rutilated quartzes are alike. A Greek legend tells that Venus lost a lock of her golden hair, which was captured in the ice for ever. That is why rutilated quartz is still known today as “Venus hair”.
