What is smoky quartz?

Smoky quartz is a quartz in warm, smoky shades of brown. It owes its colour to natural radiation in the surrounding rock, acting on the crystal over very long periods of time. A curiosity: in Scotland it is known as “Cairngorm” and is regarded as the national gemstone. Hardness 7 on the Mohs scale.
