What is topaz?

Topaz reaches a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, making it an ideal companion for rings worn every day. It probably owes its name to the island of Topazios in the Red Sea. Swiss Blue is the name of its luminous sky-blue variety – as clear as a cloudless sky above the Alps.
