What is tourmaline?

Tourmaline – from the Sinhalese “turamali” – shows a variety of colours unrivalled among gemstones. Its green varieties look fresh and vibrant. A curiosity: when tourmaline is warmed, it becomes electrically charged. Dutch traders used this property to draw ash out of meerschaum pipes and called it “aschentrekker”. Hardness 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
