What is tourmaline?

Tourmaline, named after the Sinhalese “turamali”, occurs in more colours than almost any other gemstone – pink is one of its most beautiful. It is also pyroelectric: warmth gives it an electrical charge. Dutch traders once used it to draw ash out of their meerschaum pipes and affectionately called it “aschentrekker”. Hardness 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
