What is opal?

Opal’s iridescent play of colour is created by minute spheres of silica that diffract the light like a prism. Remarkably, opal holds water within its structure. With a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, it appreciates a little consideration – it does not like knocks, heat or chemicals.
