What are rutilated quartz, citrine and smoky quartz?

All three stones are quartzes with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale – and yet entirely different. In rutilated quartz, golden needles of rutile (titanium dioxide) shimmer; according to legend, they are the hair of Venus, captured in the ice. Citrine owes its name to the French “citron”, while smoky quartz owes its colour to natural radiation in the rock – in Scotland, as “Cairngorm”, it is even the national gemstone.
