Delina or Delina Exclusif? What you smell – and when to wear which
A rose at twelve noon. The same rose by night. That is how perfumer Quentin Bisch explains the difference between Delina and Delina Exclusif by Parfums de Marly – and it could hardly be put better. So this article is not about percentages but about what you really want to know: what do you smell in each Delina, how does it feel on the skin – and which one suits which moment of your life?
- Delina (2017, Eau de Parfum) is the rose in sunlight: juicy lychee, sparkling rhubarb, a radiant Damask rose and a soft, clean base of cashmeran, musk and vetiver.
- Delina Exclusif (2018, Parfum) is the rose at dusk: pear instead of rhubarb, incense in the heart, plus vanilla, tonka bean and moss. Creamier, warmer, more mysterious.
- The difference lies less in strength than in mood: Delina feels bright and fresh, Exclusif velvety and ambery.
- When to wear which? Delina for the office, spring, a garden wedding and a lakeside terrace. Delina Exclusif for dates, autumn evenings, concerts and the ski hut.
Why these two roses?
Delina has long been more than just another women’s fragrance. On Fragrantica, more than 14,400 people have rated it, and Delina Exclusif has over 8,000 votes – numbers usually reserved for the big designer classics. Even its creator is amazed: success came “from everywhere”, Quentin Bisch said in an interview – from Brazil, the Middle East, America, Russia and France.
Because both fragrances share the same name, the same perfumer and the same pink look, confusion is common. The Fragrantica forum even has a thread titled “Delina vs Exclusif – I can’t tell the difference?”. The replies are clear: the same DNA, but “definitely not exact”. And once you know what to look for, you can smell the difference in seconds.
“If Delina was roses blooming in the garden at noon, full sun – then Exclusif would be the same thing, but by night.”
Quentin Bisch, perfumerWhat you smell: Delina, the rose in sunlight
Marly founder Julien Sprecher describes Delina as a tribute to the ladies of the Court, their gowns flowing through flowerbeds around a “luminous and joyful Damascena rose”. And that is exactly how it smells. Fruit comes first: lychee, juicy and almost glassy, with rhubarb and its green, slightly tart edge and a splash of bergamot. It sparkles as if you were holding a glass of rosé spritz.
Then the rose opens, accompanied by a touch of nutmeg. Not a powdery grandmother’s rose, but a young, transparent bloom. Bisch wanted the fragrance to be “powerful and fluid” and at the same time “transparent”. In the base, cashmeran, musk and vetiver remain: soft, clean, a little like freshly washed cashmere.
And then Delina Exclusif: the same rose by night
For Exclusif, Bisch did not simply concentrate Delina but took it further, “like season two”. Sprecher himself imagined Exclusif as “a rose at dusk, blooming in the gardens of the Château de Marly”. The lychee is still there, but instead of the sparkling rhubarb comes a round, ripe pear. This makes the opening softer and sweeter.
In the heart, incense settles over the rose – a thin veil of smoke that turns a garden party into a candlelit dinner. And the base trades cool cleanliness for warmth: vanilla, tonka bean, musk and an earthy moss note. Where Delina feels like a white linen dress, Exclusif feels like velvet.
Time travel on the skin: how both fragrances develop
What do you actually smell after four hours? The timeline below is based on the official notes and on how the perfumer, the brand and the Fragrantica community describe the development. Every skin is different, but this is how many wearers experience it:
Delina (Eau de Parfum)
- The first minutesLychee, rhubarb and bergamot: juicy, sparkling, slightly tart. Many describe the opening as zesty, a few as too sharp.
- After 1 hourThe Damask rose takes centre stage with a hint of nutmeg. According to Bisch, the lychee freshness stays “from top to bottom” – a rose in full sun.
- After 4 hoursThe rose becomes quieter and softer. Cashmeran and musk take over, and many now describe the scent as creamy and close to the skin.
- In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA clean musk-and-cashmere glow with a rosy echo, discreet and freshly laundered.
Delina Exclusif (Parfum)
- The first minutesLychee, pear and bergamot: rounder and sweeter than Delina. On some skins the opening is briefly tart before it settles.
- After 1 hourThe rose blooms, this time with incense. Many describe it as a powdery, creamy rose, “sweet but not cloying” – the rose at dusk.
- After 4 hoursVanilla, tonka bean and musk come forward, the moss adds depth. For many fans, this drydown is the most beautiful part of the fragrance.
- In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA warm, vanilla-amber rose with a hint of incense. Many report great longevity, while some find the incense very present in the drydown.
The note pyramids compared
Here are the official notes according to Parfums de Marly. New marks what only Delina Exclusif has.
| Delina (2017) | Delina Exclusif (2018) | |
|---|---|---|
| Top notes | Bergamot, lychee, rhubarb | Bergamot, pear, lychee |
| Heart notes | Damask rose, nutmeg | Damask rose, incense |
| Base notes | Cashmeran, musk, vetiver | Vanilla, musk, moss, tonka bean |
| Olfactory family | Floral, rose, woody | Amber floral |
| Character | Bright, sparkling, transparent | Velvety, creamy, mysterious |
| Perfumer | Quentin Bisch | Quentin Bisch |
What this means: rhubarb, nutmeg, cashmeran and vetiver – everything that gives Delina its fresh, slightly tart edge – are missing from Exclusif. In their place come pear, incense and a warm vanilla-tonka base. By the way: Fragrantica lists considerably longer pyramids for both (for Delina, peony, vanilla and incense, for example; for Exclusif, oud and amber). Here we stick to the brand’s own information.
What do you get for your money?
We offer both Delinas in two full-size bottle sizes. One thing first: Exclusif is not “Delina with more oil” but a composition of its own, with different raw materials in the top, heart and base.

| 75 ml | € 285 | € 305 |

What do Fragrantica users say?
The world’s largest fragrance community puts Exclusif slightly ahead. As of 14 October 2026.
Delina Exclusif
Fragrantica · 8,082 votes
4.11 / 5
- Praised: a creamy, powdery rose that doesn’t get cloying; a drydown of vanilla and woods; strong longevity and projection.
- Criticised: too powdery or headache-inducing for some, incense very present in the drydown at times, the price.
Delina
Fragrantica · 14,401 votes
3.95 / 5
- Praised: the balance of rose, lychee and rhubarb, “youthful” and modern; lots of compliments; versatile throughout the year.
- Criticised: the opening is too tart or too sweet for some, a few are reminded of upmarket shower gel, the price.
To be honest: both fragrances divide opinion – that comes with being this famous. Reports on longevity vary widely for both, from “all day” to “gone after two hours”. A clear sign of how much your skin plays a part. So our advice: test both side by side on your skin, not on paper.

Après-ski in the hut
Delina ExclusifVanilla and tonka bean warm you up when there is snow outside. The creamy base is especially lovely on a knitted jumper.
Parfums de Marly and its women’s line
Parfums de Marly is famous for its horse bottles and men’s fragrances such as Layton and Pegasus. Alongside them there is a women’s line whose names sound like ladies-in-waiting of a lost palace: Oriana, Meliora, Valaya – and Delina, the best known of them. Fittingly, Julien Sprecher calls it a tribute to the “ladies of the Court”. We tell the story of how the brand began and what lies behind the Château de Marly in our article on Althaïr and Althaïr Exclusif. Here, it is all about the rose itself – and the raw materials that make it so special.
Delina has a third sister. Quentin Bisch calls Delina La Rosée the “prequel”: the same rose, but in the early morning, not yet fully in bloom, with dew on its petals. Morning, noon, night – one rose at three times of day.
Curiosities around Delina
Rose, lychee, rhubarb – and a boss who said no
- The boss didn’t like the note at first
When Quentin Bisch and his team presented Delina, Julien Sprecher did not like one of the notes at all. The team insisted, Sprecher reconsidered and asked for just one single change. Good thing nobody gave in.
- Lychee and rose are chemical relatives
Why does the Muscaris grape smell of lychee? In 2024, researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich found the answer: the lychee note comes from the interplay of just two molecules, rose oxide and geraniol. Both are classic rose odorants – geraniol is even one of the main components of rose oil. So lychee and rose in Delina are no coincidence – they are family.
- Rhubarb was more expensive than opium
Before it ended up in pies, rhubarb was a medicine: the dried root reached Europe via the Silk Road and the Levant and cost several times as much as cinnamon, saffron and even opium. People in England only started eating the stalks in the 18th and 19th centuries, once sugar became affordable.
- Horses for a favourite consort (legend)
Lychees spoil within a few days. According to legend, the Tang emperor Xuanzong nevertheless had them brought fresh over thousands of kilometres from the south to the capital – for his beloved Yang Guifei. The poet Du Mu later wrote mockingly of a rider in the red dust at whom the consort smiles – and no one guesses he is bringing lychees. Historians consider the story exaggerated, but it is a beautiful one all the same.
- Roses are picked before sunrise
Damask roses for rose oil are harvested by hand, early in the morning before sunrise, and distilled the very same day. The yield is around 1 to 3,000. Ironic that the “rose in full sun” comes from blossoms that are never supposed to see the sun.
- A rose in a walking stick
The Turkish rose town of Isparta owes its rose fields, so the story goes there, to an act of smuggling: in the late 19th century, Müftüzade İsmail Efendi is said to have hidden a rose seedling from Bulgaria’s Rose Valley in his walking stick. Today Isparta is one of the centres of rose oil production.
- Eau de Parfum vs. Parfum: Marly lists Delina as an Eau de Parfum and Delina Exclusif as a Parfum. A Parfum usually contains a higher proportion of fragrance oils than an Eau de Parfum. There are no fixed legal limits; the terms are an industry convention.
- Petalia is a so-called captive molecule from Givaudan that only the company itself may use. According to Bisch, it is the key to Delina’s “modern rosiness” and keeps the lychee freshness from the opening to the drydown.
- Cashmeran was developed at IFF in the 1970s. The name is meant to convey the soft feel of cashmere – exactly what you sense in Delina’s drydown.
- The moss in Exclusif is Evernyl, a molecule with a dry, earthy moss character. Natural oakmoss is heavily restricted under IFRA standards, and Evernyl is regarded as a modern substitute. Bisch says he chose it “for a certain reason”.
- Turkish rose is temperamental. It is “beautiful but very powerful”, says Bisch – overdosed, it no longer feels modern. That is why Delina works with a duet of natural rose and Petalia.
Frequently asked questions about Delina and Delina Exclusif
What is the difference between Delina and Delina Exclusif?
Delina is a bright, fruity rose with lychee, rhubarb and a clean base of cashmeran, musk and vetiver. Delina Exclusif replaces the rhubarb with pear, adds incense and builds on vanilla, tonka bean, musk and moss. This makes it warmer, creamier and more suited to the evening.
Is Delina Exclusif stronger than Delina?
Exclusif is labelled as a Parfum, Delina as an Eau de Parfum. Many describe Exclusif as very long-lasting, but experiences vary widely for both. The more important difference is the character: day versus evening, freshness versus warmth.
What does Delina smell like after a few hours?
After about four hours the rose steps back and cashmeran and musk define the scent. Many then describe it as soft, creamy and close to the skin. At this point Delina Exclusif smells noticeably more of vanilla and warmer.
Which Delina is right for the office?
Delina. It is fresher and more transparent and easy to apply discreetly. Delina Exclusif is more of an evening fragrance and suits autumn and winter.
Are there other Delina fragrances?
Yes, for example Delina La Rosée. Perfumer Quentin Bisch describes it as the “prequel”: the same rose in the morning, dewy and not yet fully in bloom.
