Valaya or Valaya Exclusif? What you smell – and when to wear which

Fresh bed linen or a cashmere jumper? That, roughly, is the answer to the question we hear most often about Valaya and Valaya Exclusif by Parfums de Marly. Both share the same name and the same white bottle, and both want to smell of skin and fabric. But they tell that story in two very different keys. Here you can read what you smell in each version, how both change over the day and when to reach for which one.

In a nutshell
  • What does Valaya smell like? Bright, clean and airy: aldehydes, bergamot, mandarin and white peach, over white flowers and soft white musk. Marly itself speaks of a veil of linen on the skin.
  • What does Valaya Exclusif smell like? Creamier, more powdery and warmer: almond right from the opening, a powdery floral heart and a base of sandalwood, vanilla and white musk.
  • The difference in one sentence: Valaya is the freshly ironed white shirt, Valaya Exclusif the soft jumper on top.
  • When to wear which? Valaya for the office, spring, summer and daytime. Valaya Exclusif for evenings, cooler months and occasions where you want to be remembered.

Why this pair?

Valaya launched in early 2023 and quickly became one of the house's most talked-about women's fragrances: on Fragrantica more than 6,600 people have rated it, plus over a thousand written reviews. Valaya Exclusif followed in January 2025, and in less than two years the newcomer has already collected more than 2,000 votes – with a higher average score than the original. A rare case of the sequel doing better with the community.

That status is no accident. At Marly, the Exclusif line is reserved for the big names: Delina Exclusif, Layton Exclusif, Pegasus Exclusif and, most recently, Althaïr Exclusif. How differently Marly can approach such a sequel is shown in our article on Althaïr and Althaïr Exclusif.

“Valaya is sunlight on a white shirt. Valaya Exclusif is the same shirt when evening falls.”

What you smell: Valaya

Valaya was developed by perfumer Quentin Bisch together with Marly founder Julien Sprecher. Sprecher describes the fragrance as the feeling of cotton on the skin. The idea comes from 18th-century fashion: women wore several layers of petticoats, and the layer closest to the skin was, as Marly tells it, called “le secret”. Valaya sets out to be exactly that innermost, intimate layer.

In the bottle, that means a sparkling, almost fizzy opening of aldehydes, bergamot and mandarin, softened by juicy white peach. Then orange blossom and white flowers open up, resting on a bed of white musk, akigalawood, vanilla and vetiver. The result smells less like a bouquet and more like clean, warm skin after a shower. That is why many call Valaya a “skin scent with radiance”.

What changes in Valaya Exclusif

Valaya Exclusif keeps the framework but shifts the feeling. From the very first moment, almond sits beside the citrus notes, soft and slightly marzipan-like. The floral heart becomes more powdery, almost like face powder in an old compact. And the base gains sandalwood, which makes everything creamier and rounder. Marly calls the fragrance “elegant, sensual and alluring”, and Julien Sprecher speaks of “the ultimate expression of true elegance”.

The difference feels like two fabrics: Valaya is cotton, cool and smooth. Valaya Exclusif is cashmere, soft, warm and a touch more luxurious. The Fragrantica community sees it the same way: in the original, musk, citrus and “fresh” lead the way; in the Exclusif, “powdery” and “almond” come first.

A journey on the skin: how both fragrances develop

What does Valaya smell like after four hours? And what is left of the Exclusif on your scarf the next morning? This is how the official notes and the experiences of the Fragrantica community describe the typical development. Every skin is different, but the trend is remarkably consistent.

Valaya

  1. The first minutesBright and fizzy: aldehydes, bergamot and mandarin, with white peach. Some find the opening a little sharp, others gloriously fresh.
  2. After 1 hourThe citrus steps back and orange blossom with a lily-of-the-valley-bright floral heart takes over. This is where the “cotton on skin” feeling arrives.
  3. After 4 hoursWhite musk, a hint of vanilla and the dry woods of akigalawood. Many now describe the scent as creamy, clean and close to the skin.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA light, clean musk with a soft amber glow. It smells like fresh laundry that smells of you.

Valaya Exclusif

  1. The first minutesAlmond meets bergamot and mandarin. According to the community, the opening can feel a little ambroxan-heavy and strong for the first half hour to an hour and a half.
  2. After 1 hourOrange blossom, lily of the valley and lotus, wrapped in powder. Softer and rounder than the original, with the almond lingering as a gentle shimmer.
  3. After 4 hoursThe drydown many love most: sandalwood, vanilla, white musk and heliotrope. Creamy, powdery, cosy.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningPowder, sandalwood and warm musk. More cashmere jumper than washing line, and noticeable for much longer.

The fragrance pyramids compared

The official notes from Parfums de Marly show where the Exclusif version steps in. New marks what the original does not contain.

Valaya (2023) Valaya Exclusif (2025)
Top notes Bergamot, mandarin, white peach Almond, bergamot, mandarin
Heart notes Orange blossom, white flowers Orange blossom, white flowers, powdery notes
Base notes White musks, akigalawood, vanilla, vetiver White musks, akigalawood, vanilla, sandalwood
Fragrance family Floral, woody, musky Floral, powdery, woody
Feeling Cotton, sunshine, freshly washed Cashmere, powder, candlelight

What this means: the white peach gives way to almond, and vetiver makes room for sandalwood. As a result, the Exclusif loses some of the original's green, airy freshness and gains warmth and creaminess. Fragrantica also lists aldehydes, lily of the valley and ambroxan for both fragrances, plus lotus and heliotrope for the Exclusif.

What do you get for your money?

To be honest: if you are looking for exactly the clean, airy Valaya, only stronger, the Exclusif will not automatically make you happier. It is not “more of the same” but a different mood. We stock both fragrances in two bottle sizes.

Our tip: the 30 ml bottles are ideal if you want to alternate between the two – Valaya for the day, Valaya Exclusif for the evening.

What does the community say?

On Fragrantica both fragrances sit in the upper range, with the Exclusif noticeably ahead of the original. The bars show the main accords the community perceives in each fragrance (relative strength). As of 14 October 2026.

What the community praises: for Valaya, the clean, fresh character, the compliments and the strong longevity. For Valaya Exclusif, the creamy, powdery elegance and the way the almond rounds off the original's somewhat sharp, aldehydic opening. Many write that a single spray is enough.

And the criticism: with both fragrances, the clean musk reminds some people of laundry detergent or fabric softener. Some find the original's opening sharp, and some find the powder and ambroxan in the Exclusif too dominant. Several also write that the two are so similar that one is enough. Our advice: test both side by side on your skin, not on paper.

Valaya

Monday morning at the office

Clean, polished and never pushy. Valaya smells of a fresh shirt and a good night's sleep – even if you didn't get one.

Valaya

Aperitivo on a summer terrace

Peach, bergamot and orange blossom love the warmth. In summer Valaya feels light and radiant, where the Exclusif can quickly turn too powdery.

Valaya

Long-haul flight

One spray for that fresh-laundry feeling after twelve hours in the cabin – and no scent cloud to bother the person next to you.

Valaya Exclusif

Wedding guest

White, elegant, powdery: the Exclusif suits silk and lace and lasts from the ceremony to the last dance.

Valaya Exclusif

First date over dinner

Almond, sandalwood and warm musk feel close and sensual without being loud. Exactly the scent people remember the next day.

Valaya Exclusif

Ski hut and winter evenings

When it is cold outside, the Exclusif feels like a cashmere scarf. Valaya tends to go quiet in the cold.

The story behind Valaya

Parfums de Marly was founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher and brings the splendour of the 18th-century French court into the present – you can read more about the history of the house and the Château de Marly in our Althaïr article. While the men's fragrances mostly bear the names of legendary horses, the women's fragrances tell of the ladies of the court and their wardrobes.

Valaya picks up an unusual theme: not jewels or silk, but cotton, a precious and long hotly contested fabric in the 18th century. The white, translucent bottle with its white satin tassel fits the idea. Valaya Exclusif, by contrast, references the pared-back, masterly silhouette of late 18th-century court dress. According to Marly, the silver details on its white bottle nod to the precious embroidery noblewomen loved at the time.

Curiosities around Valaya

From forbidden cotton to musk from an explosives lab

  1. A name like a bangle

Parfums de Marly does not explain the name Valaya. In Sanskrit, however, “valaya” means bangle, ring or circle. A lovely coincidence for a fragrance that wraps around the skin like a piece of jewellery.

  2. Cotton was banned in France

What Valaya celebrates was long illegal: from 1686 to 1759, printed cotton fabrics could be neither produced nor imported in France, to protect the domestic silk and wool industries. Smugglers risked years in the galleys. In 1730 women in Paris were even arrested simply for wearing a jacket made of the fabric. After 73 years France gave up and replaced the ban with a customs duty.

  3. The queen in her underdress

In 1783 the painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun showed a portrait of Marie Antoinette at the Paris Salon in a simple white dress of cotton muslin. The public was shocked: the queen looked as if she were in her underwear. The picture was taken down, and Vigée Le Brun painted a new version in a silk gown in no time – partly because the silk weavers of Lyon were outraged by the imported cotton.

  4. The secret beneath the skirts

In the 18th century women wore several layers of petticoats on top of one another. The layer directly on the skin was, as Parfums de Marly tells it, called “le secret”. Valaya is meant as a scented version of exactly that layer.

  5. Musk from an explosives lab

The white musk in both Valayas has an explosive back story. In 1888 the chemist Albert Baur was trying to develop a more effective explosive along the lines of TNT and instead obtained a substance that smelled of musk. It was one of the first synthetic musks. Today musk in perfumery practically always comes from the lab rather than from the musk deer.

  6. Amber from sugar cane

The warm amber glow in Valaya does not come from a whale. Several trade publications name Givaudan's Ambrofix as one of the fragrance's building blocks, an amber molecule made by fermenting sugar cane. According to Givaudan, this process needs around a hundred times less land per kilo than conventional cultivation.

  7. An oud effect without oud

Akigalawood, an ingredient in both Valayas, is created when Givaudan researchers treat patchouli oil with enzymes. The result is a dry, woody scent with a peppery note and a hint of oud – without any agarwood at all.

For fragrance nerds: 5 facts about Valaya & Valaya Exclusif
  • Exclusif is not a concentration. At Marly, “Exclusif” stands for a reinterpretation. The brand's website currently lists Valaya Exclusif as an Eau de Parfum, while at the 2025 launch Marly's managing director Yvan Jacqueline spoke of a Parfum concentration. What really matters is the changed composition, not the label.
  • Nympheal is a Givaudan molecule with a fresh lily-of-the-valley character and a hint of linden blossom. It is biodegradable and, according to Fragrantica, part of Valaya.
  • Aldehydes give the original its sparkling, soapy-clean opening. They are the reason Valaya is so often compared to fresh laundry.
  • Heliotrope smells of almond, vanilla and a little powder. According to Fragrantica it features in the Exclusif and reinforces its soft, powdery impression.
  • One perfumer, two bestsellers. Valaya was created by Quentin Bisch, who also composed Delina for Marly. Marly does not name a perfumer for Valaya Exclusif.

Frequently asked questions about Valaya and Valaya Exclusif

What is the difference between Valaya and Valaya Exclusif?

Valaya is bright, fresh and clean, with aldehydes, white peach, white flowers and white musk. Valaya Exclusif replaces the peach with almond, adds powdery notes and sandalwood, and therefore feels creamier, more powdery and warmer.

Is Valaya Exclusif simply a stronger Valaya?

No. At Parfums de Marly, Exclusif is a reinterpretation with a changed fragrance pyramid. Many do find it longer-lasting, but the real difference lies in the character: powder and almond instead of freshness and peach.

What does Valaya smell like after a few hours?

After about four hours, many describe Valaya as creamy and close to the skin: white musk, a hint of vanilla and dry woods. At the same point Valaya Exclusif turns powdery and creamy with sandalwood, vanilla and heliotrope.

Which Valaya is better for summer?

For hot days, Valaya. Bergamot, mandarin and peach feel fresh and airy in the warmth. Valaya Exclusif shows its strengths more in cooler months and in the evening.

Who created Valaya?

Valaya was created by perfumer Quentin Bisch and Marly founder Julien Sprecher and launched in 2023. Valaya Exclusif followed in January 2025; Marly does not name a perfumer for it.
