Elysium or Elysium Parfum? What you smell – and when to wear which

A name like a promise. Elysion was what the ancient Greeks called the place where it never snows, never storms and a cool breeze always blows in from the sea. In 2017 Roja Dove dedicated a fragrance to this paradise, and it has since become one of the best-known men’s fragrances in niche perfumery: Elysium Pour Homme by Roja Parfums. It comes in two versions: the Eau de Parfum, originally called “Parfum Cologne” by ROJA, and Elysium Pour Homme Parfum. Which one smells like what, and when should you reach for which? That is what we explore here – with the nose, not the calculator.

In short
  • What is Elysium Pour Homme? A citrus-woody men’s fragrance by Roja Parfums from 2017, composed by Roja Dove himself. Grapefruit, lime and lemon meet herbs, vetiver, cedar and a base of ambergris, leather and vanilla.
  • What does the EdP (Parfum Cologne) smell like? Fizzier, airier and more herbal: lots of citrus, thyme and juniper, later dry vetiver wood. The classic “daytime hero”.
  • What does the Parfum smell like? The same idea, but denser, smoother and creamier. The citrus feels rounder, and the base of benzoin, vanilla, labdanum and musk settles on the skin like a soft jumper.
  • Which one when? The EdP for the office, the terrace and every day you want to come across fresh. The Parfum for evenings, celebrations and moments when someone gets really close.

Why this pair?

Elysium is something like ROJA’s calling card. The house itself writes that the fragrance “has consistently triumphed on the global stage since its debut in 2017”. The community agrees: on Fragrantica more than 5,800 people have rated the Parfum Cologne version, while the Parfum has more than 1,300 votes – and scores even slightly higher at 4.50 out of 5. And almost always the same question comes up: “Is the Parfum worth it, or is the EdP enough?”

“The EdP is Elysium in a linen shirt. The Parfum is Elysium in a cashmere jumper.”

What you smell: Elysium Pour Homme EdP

Imagine someone in a kitchen by the sea slicing a grapefruit, a lime and a lemon all at once, while thyme and lavender grow outside. That is how the EdP opens: bright, sparkling, with a green, slightly bitter kick of galbanum. Then come apple and blackcurrant, a little lily of the valley, juniper and pink pepper. And underneath waits a dry, clean wood of vetiver, cedar and cypriol.

ROJA itself calls Elysium a “Woody Citrus” and gives it the moods “fresh, uplifting, heroic, sensual”. Fragrantica lists the Parfum Cologne version as an aromatic fougère, with citrus, aromatic and woody as its strongest accords. Many reviewers call it a clean, versatile everyday scent, some compare it to Aventus or Bleu de Chanel. Others disagree and stress that Elysium is more citrusy and more herbal.

What changes in the Parfum

The Parfum tells the same story, only quieter and deeper. On Fragrantica, most reviewers describe it as denser, smoother and richer in the base. The citrus doesn’t jump, it glows. Some report that the Parfum opens a little sweeter before moving closer to the profile of the EdP. The herbs step back; instead the flowers (lily of the valley, rose, jasmine) and above all the drydown take centre stage: creamy, powdery, almost “buttery”, as one reviewer puts it.

The EdP feels like a splash of cold water on the face, the Parfum like freshly washed skin that is still warm from the day.

A journey on the skin: how both versions develop

Based on ROJA’s official notes and on how reviewers on Fragrantica describe the development. Every skin is different, so treat the times as a guide.

Elysium Pour Homme EdP

  1. The first minutesA sparkling citrus cocktail of grapefruit, lemon, lime and bergamot, plus thyme, lavender and artemisia. It is exactly this opening that reviewers praise most often.
  2. After 1 hourThe citrus calms down. Apple, blackcurrant and lily of the valley take over, juniper and pink pepper add a gin-like kick of freshness. Vetiver and cedar move to the front.
  3. After 4 hoursDry, clean wood of vetiver, cedar and cypriol with a touch of leather and ambergris. According to many reviewers, the fragrance now stays close to the skin.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningOn fabric, a woody-ambery trace with a glimmer of leather lingers. On skin, many community voices recommend a second spray in the afternoon.

Elysium Pour Homme Parfum

  1. The first minutesThe same citrus, but more focused and rounder, a little sweeter for some reviewers. Less herbal sparkle, instead a smooth, polished sheen.
  2. After 1 hourThe floral heart of lily of the valley, rose and jasmine becomes noticeable, carried by apple and pink pepper. The fragrance feels more elegant and less sporty.
  3. After 4 hoursThe drydown many buy the Parfum for: benzoin, vanilla, labdanum and musk, described as creamy and powdery. It still stays fresh.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA soft, ambery glow of vanilla, benzoin and leather. One reviewer reports around six hours on skin, and considerably longer on a scarf.

The notes compared

One special feature first: ROJA publishes one shared note pyramid for both versions. Top: lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, lime, lavender, thyme, artemisia, musk. Heart: lily of the valley, Rose de Mai, Jasmin de Grasse, apple, blackcurrant. Base: galbanum, pink pepper, cypriol, vetiver, cedarwood, juniper berry, benzoin, vanilla, labdanum, leather, ambergris, musk. The differences lie in the weighting. That is why Fragrantica lists the notes a little differently – and that is exactly what reveals which notes come to the fore in which version.

Elysium Pour Homme EdP Elysium Pour Homme Parfum
Top notes Grapefruit, lemon, bergamot, lime, galbanum, thyme, artemisia Grapefruit, lemon, lime, galbanum
Heart notes Apple, blackcurrant, lily of the valley, jasmine, rose, pink pepper, vetiver, cedar, juniper, cypriol Apple, lily of the valley, jasmine, rose, pink pepper, woody notes
Base notes Ambergris, leather, vanilla, benzoin, labdanum Ambergris, leather, vanilla, benzoin, labdanum, musk
Character Aromatic, fizzy, dry-woody Citrusy, ambery, creamy-powdery
Perfumer, year Roja Dove, 2017 Roja Dove, 2017

What this means: Highlighted are the notes Fragrantica only lists for one of the two versions. In the EdP, herbs, juniper and vetiver are in the spotlight, which makes it greener and more “gin-like”. In the Parfum they step back, while musk and the balsamic base move forward. By the way: since 2023 there has also been Elysium Eau Intense, a third, independent interpretation – but that is another story.

Did you know?

The juniper in Elysium is the same flavour-giver as in gin. The word “gin” is even a shortened form of “genever”, related to the French “genièvre” and the Dutch “jenever”, all derived from the Latin “juniperus”: juniper. So Elysium with a gin and tonic is a family reunion.

What do you get for your money?

The honest answer: the Parfum is not a “stronger EdP”, but a different texture of the same idea. If you love the fizzy, herbal freshness, you will often be happier with the EdP. If you are looking for a creamy, elegant drydown that tells its story closer to the skin, you will find it in the Parfum.

What does the community say?

Both versions score very well on Fragrantica, the Parfum slightly better. More revealing than the stars are the main accords the community assigns: at a glance, they show how differently the two feel. As of 14 October 2026.

What the community says: For the EdP, people mainly praise the opening, the high quality of the citrus and its versatility; many call it their ideal office companion. The most common criticism concerns projection and longevity, some find it too “ordinary” for its price bracket, and for some the leathery drydown is too mature. For the Parfum, reviewers praise the rounder, creamy drydown and its “quiet luxury” feel. Here too the price is criticised, as is, depending on the skin, a rather close-to-skin performance. Several voices feel the EdP offers almost the same experience, while others clearly consider the Parfum the better version. Our advice: compare both on your skin.

In the heat, the fizzy grapefruit-and-lime opening shows what it can do. And the juniper goes perfectly with the gin and tonic in your hand.

Uncomplicated, fresh, right for any climate. The fragrance for travelling that you don’t have to think about.

Cold air, warm wood: vanilla, benzoin and labdanum feel like a cashmere scarf here, the citrus like sunshine on snow.

Roja Dove and his paradise

Who Roja Dove is, how he worked for Guerlain for almost twenty years and why his perfumery at Harrods became legendary – we tell that story in detail in our article The aromatic odyssey of ROJA Parfums. Just this much here: Elysium is one of his own compositions and, for many, the gateway to the world of ROJA.

More exciting at this point is the name. ROJA describes Elysium as a “fragrant paradise” and writes that only the heroic and virtuous are destined to achieve the life they desire. A direct nod to Greek mythology: originally only heroes and mortals related to the gods were allowed into Elysion, later the righteous too. A rather exclusive club. You will find all the house’s fragrances in our Roja Parfums collection.

Curiosities around Elysium

From the heroes’ paradise to a volcano on Mars

  1. The weather in paradise

In the Odyssey, Homer describes Elysion as the place where life is easiest for men: no snow, no heavy storm, never any rain, only the west wind that the ocean sends up to cool them.

  2. The Champs-Élysées were once vegetable gardens

The most famous street in Paris translates as “Elysian Fields”. André Le Nôtre laid it out in 1667, but it only received its name in 1709. Before that, the land was largely fields and kitchen gardens.

  3. Baseball was born in Elysium

On the “Elysian Fields” in Hoboken, New Jersey, the match considered the first fully documented baseball game took place on 19 June 1846. The result was anything but paradise for the Knickerbockers: they lost 1–23.

  4. There is an Elysium on Mars too

Elysium Mons is a volcano on Mars, around 12.6 kilometres above its base, discovered in 1972 in images from the Mariner 9 probe.

  5. Ambergris: from the sperm whale to the shore

The base note ambergris goes back to a substance from the digestive system of sperm whales; only around one per cent of the animals produce it. Fresh, it smells unpleasant; only after months to years at sea does it become sweet and earthy. In 2021, fishermen off Yemen found a 127-kilo piece worth around 1.5 million US dollars.

  6. Labdanum from a goat’s beard

Labdanum, one of the building blocks of the base, is a resin from the rockrose. In antiquity it was collected by combing the beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had grazed among the sticky shrubs.

For fragrance nerds: 4 facts about Elysium
  • “Parfum Cologne” is ROJA’s own term. That was the original name of the 100 ml version; ROJA London now lists it as an EDP. The Parfum is the more concentrated version. Parfums generally contain more perfume oil than eaux de parfum; ROJA does not publish exact percentages for Elysium.
  • Galbanum is ancient. The green, bitter resin from Ferula plants is already mentioned in the Bible (Exodus 30:34) as an ingredient of the holy incense. In perfumery, it helped found the family of “green” fragrances in 1945 with Balmain’s Vent Vert.
  • Cypriol (nagarmotha) is an oil from the roots of a sedge species, from the same plant genus as papyrus. It smells woody, earthy, dry and slightly spicy, somewhere between vetiver and patchouli.
  • Ambergris vs. Ambrox: Natural ambergris is rare and expensive, so in perfumery it has largely been replaced by synthetic ambroxide, which provides the typical radiant amber effect.

Frequently asked questions about Elysium Pour Homme

What is the difference between Elysium Pour Homme EdP and Parfum?

Both are based on the same fragrance idea by Roja Dove from 2017. The EdP (originally Parfum Cologne) is fizzier, more herbal and airier, with thyme, juniper and vetiver in the foreground. The Parfum is denser, smoother and creamier, with a soft drydown of benzoin, vanilla, labdanum and musk.

Is Elysium Parfum Cologne the same as the Eau de Parfum?

Yes. ROJA originally launched the 100 ml version as “Parfum Cologne” and now lists it as an Eau de Parfum. At 4D OUTFITTERS it is called “Elysium Pour Homme EdP”.

What does Elysium Pour Homme smell like after 4 hours?

This is how reviewers describe it: the EdP is then dry and woody with vetiver, cedar and a touch of leather, and stays close to the skin. The Parfum shows a creamy, powdery drydown with benzoin, vanilla and ambergris.

Is Elysium Pour Homme a summer fragrance?

With its citrus and herbal opening, the EdP is an ideal fragrance for spring and summer. Thanks to its warmer base, the Parfum also works well in autumn and on winter evenings.
