Icarus 347 or Extrait 967? What you smell – and when to wear which

One apple, two flight paths. Imagine biting into a green apple on a cool morning while mist still hangs over the forest. That is exactly how Icarus 347 begins, the fragrance that made the Swiss house Maison Noir a name in the niche world. In 2026 came Icarus Extrait 967, announced by the co-founder himself as “Icarus 347 on steroids”. But what do you actually smell when you spray both side by side? And which one suits your Monday morning, which one your Friday night?

In short
  • What does Icarus 347 smell like? Bright, juicy and airy: green apple and melon, then raspberry and patchouli, carried by a radiant Ambroxan glow with moss and tonka bean.
  • What does Icarus Extrait 967 smell like? The same apple, but with pink pepper, lavender and a dry woody foundation of Akigalawood and vetiver. Denser, spicier, more grown-up.
  • When to wear which? Icarus 347 for the office, spring, summer terraces and travel. Icarus Extrait 967 for evenings, autumn and winter and moments when your fragrance may show presence.
  • Who is behind them? Icarus 347 (2023) by Michel Almairac (Robertet), Icarus Extrait 967 (2026) by Nisrine Bouazzaoui Grillié (Givaudan). Two perfumers, two signatures.

Why this duo gets so much attention

Icarus 347 is Maison Noir’s flagship. On Fragrantica, 130 members have rated it, with an average of 4.09 out of 5. When it was presented in 2023, Fragrantica writer Miguel Matos noted that it reminded him of Aventus, one of the most famous fruity fragrances of all. So it is no coincidence that this is the scent Maison Noir chose for its first extrait version.

“Icarus 347 was about daring to rise. With 967 Extrait, we wanted to go deeper.”

Claudio Denz, co-founder of Maison Noir, via Fragrantica

What you smell: two flights, one myth

Icarus 347: the moment of take-off

Maison Noir tells the scent like a film scene: “You spread your wings, leap and fly high above a rolling forest landscape.” On the skin this means: green apple and melon open bright, cool and almost watery, like a glass of sparkling apple juice with ice. Underneath sits a “blue”, ozonic shimmer that the Fragrantica writer describes as a bleu accord. In the heart it turns redder and sweeter: red apple, raspberry and a touch of patchouli. One Fragrantica member puts it charmingly: it smells as if you “just had a bath in apple juice”.

The feeling behind it: freshly showered, in a good mood, uncomplicated. Icarus 347 is the scent you spray on in the morning without thinking twice.

Icarus Extrait 967: flying into the evening sun

In the extrait the apple remains the face, but the texture changes noticeably. Instead of watery melon, pink pepper fizzes, and according to Fragrantica lavender brings herbal clarity to the opening, almost like a freshly ironed shirt. The biggest difference lies at the bottom: Akigalawood and vetiver replace Ambroxan and moss. Where the original radiates, the extrait warms. Where the original feels like morning air, the extrait feels like a cashmere jumper over a white shirt. The first review on Fragrantica calls it “a beautiful combo and a powerhouse”.

Did you know?

There is no essential oil of apple. Whenever a perfume smells of crisp apple, it is always an accord the perfumer rebuilds from several components. That is why Maison Noir explicitly lists the notes of Icarus 347 as “Green Apple Accord” and “Red Apple Accord”.

A journey through time on the skin: what you smell when

What does Icarus 347 smell like after four hours? And what is left of the extrait on your scarf the next morning? This is how the official note pyramids, the Fragrantica editors and the community describe the development of both versions. Your skin, of course, has its own say.

Icarus 347 (Eau de Parfum)

  1. The first minutesGreen apple and melon, cool, juicy, almost fizzy. Plus the ozonic “blue” shimmer.
  2. After 1 hourRed apple and raspberry take over, patchouli adds a first earthiness. The scent becomes rounder and sweeter.
  3. After 4 hoursAmbroxan moves forward: a clean, slightly salty, ambery skin scent. Some find this glow too dominant, others love exactly that.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningAmbroxan, moss and tonka bean: a soft, fresh-warm shimmer with a memory of apple.

Icarus Extrait 967 (Extrait de Parfum)

  1. The first minutesGreen apple with fizzy pink pepper, plus herbal lavender. Lively, but drier than the original.
  2. After 1 hourRed apple, raspberry and patchouli as in Icarus 347, but the lavender keeps the heart aromatic and grown-up.
  3. After 4 hoursAkigalawood takes over: spicy, woody warmth, according to Fragrantica with depth and long-lasting presence. Vetiver adds earthy dryness.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningWood, vetiver, musk and tonka bean: a dry, warm, slightly sweet trail with hardly any fruit left.

The note pyramids compared

Maison Noir did not simply dose the pyramid higher, it deliberately rebuilt it. New marks what the original lacks; struck through is what the extrait drops.

What this means: melon and Ambroxan give the original its airy radiance. Both are gone in the extrait; pink pepper and lavender sharpen the profile, Akigalawood and vetiver give it a woody backbone. A nice twist: Akigalawood is derived from patchouli. So the extrait plays up the patchouli side of Icarus twice over.

What do you get for your money?

The honest answer first: Icarus Extrait 967 is not simply Icarus 347 with more perfume oil. If you love the bright, ozonic original, you will find a different focus in the extrait. If you wished the original had more wood and depth, that is exactly what you get.

What does the Fragrantica community say?

As of 14 October 2026. The extrait is still young, so the number of votes is small.

Main accords according to the community

  • Fruity, woody, sweet
  • Fresh, aromatic, green
  • Earthy, lavender

What the community says: many praise the original’s juicy apple character, some report compliments, and one user calls it the best scent of the brand. More critical voices find the Ambroxan too dominant, for some it is simply too much apple, and named relatives such as Prada Carbon make a few doubt its originality. There are only a few votes on the extrait so far; the first review recommends it for autumn and winter. On Parfumo, no reliably attributable ratings for either version were available on the reference date, so we have deliberately left them out.

Your moment: which Icarus when?

Icarus 347

Monday morning at the office

Fresh, clean, friendly. The apple wakes you up, the Ambroxan stays discreetly close to the skin. Nobody in the meeting feels overwhelmed.

Icarus 347

Summer terrace by the lake

Melon and green apple are in their element in the warmth. The extrait would be too dense here; the original feels like a cool drink.

Icarus 347

Long-haul flight

Light, unobtrusive and considerate towards the person next to you. And after landing you still smell like morning.

Icarus Extrait 967

First date

A familiar apple, but with wood and lavender. More intriguing up close, and it leaves a warm trail on the scarf.

Icarus Extrait 967

Ski hut and autumn walk

Vetiver and Akigalawood love cool air. That is exactly when the first Fragrantica review recommends the extrait.

Icarus Extrait 967

Late bar or wedding guest

When the night gets long, the extrait keeps up. Fruity enough for joie de vivre, woody enough for a suit.

The story of Maison Noir

Designed in Switzerland, crafted in France: that is how Maison Noir describes itself. According to retailer information, the brand was founded in 2021 by perfumer Claudio Denz and investment banker David Weber. The fragrances are created with major fragrance houses and renowned perfumers, for Icarus with Robertet and Givaudan. Michel Almairac, the creator of Icarus 347, is a grand master of his craft: his work includes Gucci Pour Homme (2003) and the Bottega Veneta Eau de Parfum (2011).

Icarus tells the myth of the boy who flew towards the sun on wings of feathers and wax. Maison Noir, however, does not tell the story of the fall, but of the moment of take-off. Besides Icarus, you will find further Maison Noir fragrances with us, such as Quandoley 805, Alter Ego 786 and Vertigo 236.

Curiosities around Icarus

What lies behind the names, numbers and ingredients

  1. The number is a compass

Every Maison Noir fragrance carries a three-digit number that describes its olfactory personality, inspired by the famous fragrance wheel of perfume expert Michael Edwards. So 347 and 967 are a kind of coordinates.

  2. An island bears his name

According to legend, Icarus fell into the Aegean Sea and was buried on an island that has borne his name ever since: Ikaria. The sea around the island is still called the Icarian Sea.

  3. The most famous Icarus painting shows only two legs

In “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” in Brussels, a farmer calmly keeps ploughing, a ship sails past, and all you can see of Icarus are two legs in the water. Since technical examinations in 1996, many experts consider the painting an early copy of a lost Bruegel original.

  4. Ambroxan without the whale

The original’s glow comes from Ambroxan, the molecule that shapes the scent of ambergris, a substance from the digestive tract of the sperm whale. Today it is made from sclareol, obtained from clary sage.

  5. Akigalawood is upcycled patchouli

The new woody note in the extrait was developed by Givaudan through biotechnology from leftovers of patchouli distillation, patented in 2010 and first used in a perfume in 2014. Givaudan owns it exclusively; other houses cannot buy it.

For fragrance nerds
  • Eau de Parfum vs. Extrait de Parfum: the extrait is the highest classic concentration. There are no fixed legal limits; each house decides on the dosage itself.
  • Akigalawood is a captive: an ingredient only Givaudan perfumers may use. Givaudan describes it as spicy, clean, fresh and woody at the same time.
  • Ambroxan is famous for its tenacity. It is the reason the original often stays on a scarf longer than you would expect.
  • Pink pepper is botanically not a pepper at all, but the fruit of the pepper tree. It brings fizz rather than heat.
  • Vetiver is distilled from the roots of a grass and provides the dry, slightly smoky earthiness in the extrait’s drydown.

Frequently asked questions about Icarus 347 and Icarus Extrait 967

What is the difference between Icarus 347 and Icarus Extrait 967?

Icarus 347 is bright, juicy and airy with apple, melon, raspberry and an Ambroxan glow. Icarus Extrait 967 keeps apple, raspberry and patchouli, adds pink pepper and lavender, and replaces Ambroxan and moss with Akigalawood, vetiver and musk. It feels woodier, spicier and denser.

What does Icarus 347 smell like after a few hours?

After the fresh apple and melon opening, raspberry and patchouli come to the fore; after a few hours a clean, ambery Ambroxan skin scent with moss and tonka bean dominates.

Is Icarus Extrait 967 simply stronger than Icarus 347?

Not only. It is more concentrated, but the note pyramid was also rebuilt and comes from a different perfumer. That is why the character is different: less airy, more wood.

Which Icarus is better for summer and the office?

Icarus 347. Melon and green apple feel fresh and unobtrusive in warm weather. Icarus Extrait 967 shows its strengths on cool days and in the evening.
