Initio Side Effect: What Does It Smell Like and Who Is It For?
Rum, tobacco and cinnamon, plus a molecule said to go straight to your brain. Side Effect by Initio Parfums Privés has been one of niche perfumery’s best-known evening fragrances since 2016. What does Initio Side Effect really smell like, who is it for, what lies behind the brand’s promise, and which alternatives are there if it is too much, or not quite enough, for you?
- The fragrance: Side Effect is a warm, spicy Eau de Parfum with rum, tobacco, cinnamon, saffron and sandalwood, plus Hedione. Released in 2016 as part of the Carnal Blends collection.
- The impression: boozy, sweet and spicy, dense. A scent for cool evenings, not for an open-plan office in July.
- The promise: Initio says Hedione awakens the senses. One study does show measurable brain activity, but a seductive effect has not been proven.
- Alternatives: Musk Therapy for clean musk, Rehab for lavender and woods, Replica Jazz Club for a lighter take on rum and tobacco.
What does Initio Side Effect smell like?
Like a glass of dark rum with a cinnamon stick in it, served in a room where someone smoked a good cigar an hour ago. According to Initio, the main notes are cinnamon, rum, tobacco, saffron, sandalwood and Hedione. In its fragrance description, the brand also mentions vanilla with leathery, animalic and woody facets, even though it is missing from the list of notes.
On the skin, Side Effect opens fruity and boozy, almost like dried fruit steeped in spirits. Then tobacco and cinnamon take over, and what remains at the end is a warm, sweetish skin scent of sandalwood and vanilla. In 2023, Fragrantica writer Eddie Bulliqi headed his review with an image that sticks: “Boiled Sweets Melted In Gasoline”. He describes Side Effect as a boozy amber with dried fruit.

Who is Side Effect for?
For anyone who hears the word gourmand and thinks not of candyfloss, but of a bar with leather armchairs. Side Effect has no gender, more a time of day. It is especially well suited to:
- Autumn and winter evenings: in the cold, the sweetness feels warm and rounded; in high summer, it can quickly turn heavy.
- Dinner, bars, concerts: anywhere a fragrance is allowed to show some personality.
- Fans of tobacco and rum: if you like Xerjoff’s warm amber fragrances, you will feel at home here in no time.
Those who love fresh, transparent scents or are looking for something for a cramped office will be less happy. Our tip: two sprays are plenty. Side Effect is not a fragrance you need to top up to notice.
What is Hedione, and does it really make people fall in love?
Hedione is the trade name for methyl dihydrojasmonate, an aroma chemical with a fresh, radiant jasmine character. Edouard Demole described and synthesised it at Firmenich in Geneva, with the findings published in 1962. Its first big success was Dior’s Eau Sauvage, composed by Edmond Roudnitska and launched in 1966. Since then, Hedione has found its way into countless perfumes, often unnoticed, because it adds air and sparkle rather than a loud smell of its own.
Why make it synthetically? According to Wikipedia, the related natural substance methyl jasmonate makes up less than 0.8 per cent of jasmine oil. At the same time, Hedione is highly effective: its detection threshold is around 15 parts per billion. To put that in perspective, that is 15 millilitres spread across a million litres.
In 2015, researchers from Bochum and Dresden showed in the journal NeuroImage that Hedione activates a receptor called VN1R1, which is considered a possible pheromone receptor. In the brain scanner, areas of the limbic system responded more strongly than to a comparison scent, and a region in the hypothalamus responded differently in women and men. The authors cautiously write that VN1R1 could play a role. The study did not show that Hedione makes people more attractive.
For Carnal Blends, Initio speaks of an overdose of Hedione that awakens the senses and says it is working with dsm-firmenich to measure emotional responses to its fragrances. Our honest take: Hedione makes a fragrance bright, radiant and expansive. Whether you come across as seductive in Side Effect is still down to you, not the molecule.

Side Effect or Musk Therapy: what is the difference?
These two are the best-known Initio fragrances at our boutique, and they could hardly be more different. Musk Therapy was released in 2021 as an Extrait de Parfum in the Hedonist collection. The notes: bergamot, mandarin, white magnolia and blackcurrant, over white sandalwood and white and pink musk. Initio calls it a mood booster.
| Side Effect | Musk Therapy | |
|---|---|---|
| Character | warm, spicy, boozy | bright, clean, close to the skin |
| Collection | Carnal Blends (2016) | Hedonist (2021) |
| Concentration | Eau de Parfum | Extrait de Parfum |
| Best for | evenings, autumn and winter | daytime, office, all year round |
| Our price | from € 220 (50 ml) | from € 230 (50 ml) |
A small aside for fans of freshness: Musk Therapy also comes as a Hair Mist, and if you like both worlds, wear Side Effect in the evening and Musk Therapy during the day.
What are the alternatives to Side Effect?
Depending on what draws you to Side Effect, the path leads in a different direction:
- You love the Hedione freshness, but not the sweetness? Rehab (2018): bergamot, lavender, cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood, Hedione and musk. Drier, clearer, easier to wear every day.
- You want more depth and smoke? Oud for Greatness (2018): oud, saffron, lavender, nutmeg and patchouli. Darker and woodier than Side Effect.
- You like it sweet, but brighter? Lift Me Up: ylang-ylang, bergamot, magnolia, roasted tonka bean, vanilla and musk.
- Rum and tobacco, but lighter? According to the brand, Replica Jazz Club by Maison Margiela combines pink pepper, rum, tobacco leaf, vetiver and vanilla, and as an Eau de Toilette it is considerably more restrained.
- Tobacco in the starring role? Then take a look at Tobacco Memories by Chambre52, which we compare in Tobacco Memories or Extrait?.
And why cinnamon works so well in Side Effect is a story we tell in Cinnamon in perfume: from a pharaoh’s tomb to the bottle.
Who is behind Initio Parfums Privés?
Initio was founded in Paris in 2015 by Julien Sprecher, the same man who launched Parfums de Marly in 2009. Both brands belong to the same group, in which the private equity firm Advent International has held a majority stake since 2023; Sprecher remained a shareholder and kept creative control. According to WWD, Initio launched in the US exclusively at the New York department store Bergdorf Goodman. The Paris boutique is called Le 320, after its address on the Rue Saint-Honoré. Curiosities about Side Effect
Conversation starters for the bar
- Boiled sweets in petrol
That is how Fragrantica writer Eddie Bulliqi described the fragrance in 2023, meant as a compliment to its smoky-sweet tension.
- Vanilla, unlisted
Vanilla is missing from the official list of notes, yet it appears in Initio’s own description. So if your nose detects vanilla, it is right.
- A jasmine molecule in a rum fragrance
Hedione, the star of the Carnal Blends, actually smells of fresh jasmine. In Side Effect, it keeps the heavy rum from turning sticky and makes it glow instead.
- Siblings with horse names
Initio and Parfums de Marly come from the same founder. One tells tales of racehorses, the other of emotions.
- Science in marketing
Initio says it works with dsm-firmenich to measure conscious and unconscious responses to its fragrances. So far, the brand has not published any results.
- Hedione: methyl dihydrojasmonate, molecular formula C13H22O3, described by Edouard Demole at Firmenich and published in 1962.
- First Hedione classic: Eau Sauvage by Dior, 1966, perfumer Edmond Roudnitska.
- VN1R1 receptor: can be activated by Hedione, according to the 2015 NeuroImage study. Humans have only a few functional genes in this receptor family; mice have around 300.
- Sizes: Initio offers Side Effect as an Eau de Parfum in 50 and 90 ml.
- Fragrantica family: amber (oriental); main accords warm spicy, tobacco, rum and cinnamon.
