Widian Perfume:valleys, domes and Big Ben from Abu Dhabi

A wadi is a valley that lies dry almost all year. Then one heavy rain comes, and suddenly a river rushes through it. Widian, the plural of that Arabic word, is the name of a perfume house from Abu Dhabi that bottles exactly this effect: a calm surface, and underneath a force you do not see coming.

In our online shop, Widian is one of the best-selling perfume brands, and London is its long-running favourite. Time for a proper portrait, then: who is behind Widian, why do the bottles look like little mosque domes, and what is Big Ben doing on a bottle from the Emirates?

Where does Widian come from, and who is behind it?

Widian comes from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The house was founded in 2014 by Ali Aljaberi, according to its exhibitor profile at the Florentine niche fair Pitti Fragranze, where Widian has exhibited several times. Retailers and databases often use the double name “Widian by AJ Arabia”. On its website the brand describes itself briefly as “Rooted in Abu Dhabi”.

What makes it interesting is the direction of the gaze. Here a house from the Gulf tells stories of London, New York or Aswan, composed, according to the database Parfumo, by perfumers from Europe. A view from East to West, not the other way round.

What does the name Widian mean?

Valleys. A wadi is a dry valley that only carries water after heavy rain, and such wadis shape the landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. Widian is the plural. On its homepage the brand says the name “whispers of valleys”. That suits the fragrances better than you might think: many open bright and citrusy and then tip into a dark, warm depth. First sun on sand, then shade in the valley.

Why do Widian bottles look like little domes?

Because that is exactly what they are meant to be. Widian says its bottles are inspired by the domes of Arabian architecture. The cap is a round, slightly flattened dome, below it sits a slim neck, and an ornament in relief runs across the shoulder that you can feel with your thumb.

The Sapphire Collection goes one step further. London comes in deep blue glass with a golden dome, and the silhouette of Westminster with Big Ben is printed in gold on the front. The London Black Edition shows the same motif tone on tone on black glass. A London skyline on a dome-shaped bottle from Abu Dhabi: the brand’s East-West idea could hardly be told more briefly.

What does Widian smell like?

Powerful, but not heavy. Widian describes its fragrances as a “harmony of contrasts”: bold raw materials and spices, softened by citrus and blossoms. Take London: oud, violet and cypress at the start, raspberry and lily of the valley in the heart, leather, vanilla, amber and musk at the base. On the skin it first smells dark and leathery, then the raspberry breaks through like a ray of light. Ginger from the Rose Arabia Collection shows the other side of the house: ginger, bergamot and lemon up front, magnolia and violet in the middle, sandalwood, patchouli and Ambroxan at the base. A scent that works at the office in the morning just as well as in the evening. And Black IV from the Black Collection combines blackcurrant and plum with rose and white floral notes on creamy vanilla, sandalwood and a touch of leather.

Which Widian fragrances are the classics?

For us, clearly London. Over the last twelve months it has been our best-selling Widian. What is behind names like Yasat, Liwa and Aswan?

With the cities it is simple. Aswan is a bow to the Egyptian city on the Nile known as the “Pearl of the Nile”. London and New York carry their city right on the glass.

The Velvet Collection is more intriguing. Anyone who knows the map of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will stumble over familiar names: Liwa is a large oasis on the edge of the Rub’ al Khali, one of the largest sand deserts in the world. Delma is an island off the emirate’s western coast. The Al Yasat islands have been a protected marine area since 2005. And Hili is an archaeological park in Al Ain that belongs to the Cultural Sites of Al Ain on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Widian itself does not explain the names of its fragrances. But that a house calling itself “rooted in Abu Dhabi” names its velvetiest line after places at home is at the very least a lovely coincidence.
