What is the difference between peppermint and spearmint?
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint; its oil is shaped by menthol and feels cold and sharp. Spearmint (Mentha spicata) contains mainly carvone and smells sweeter, softer and more herbal.
Why does mint feel cool?
It is down to the menthol in peppermint: it activates the cold receptor TRPM8. The skin does not actually cool down – the cool impression comes from this receptor alone.
How is mint oil for perfume obtained?
By steam distillation of the herb, which is harvested around flowering time. This applies to peppermint and spearmint alike. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
