Fragrance note

Nutmeg Perfumes

Nutmeg brings a warm, spicy-woody note with a slightly sweet undertone to a fragrance. It is the seed of the nutmeg tree, which originally grew only on the Banda Islands in Indonesia. Here you will find every perfume with nutmeg in its pyramid.

Sabinene and myristicin: the molecules of nutmeg

Nutmeg is the dried seed of the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans), which is native to the Banda Islands in the Moluccas, Indonesia. Today it comes mainly from Indonesia and Grenada. The trees only bear fruit after around seven years. When the fruit is ripe, it splits open on the tree to reveal the seed, wrapped in a red seed covering that is dried as mace. The seeds contain 5 to 15 % essential oil, obtained by steam distillation of the dried, crushed kernels. Sabinene makes up 14 to 29 % of the oil, with α-pinene present in a similar amount. Alongside them comes myristicin (C₁₁H₁₂O₃) at 5 to 12 %. Oils from Grenada are milder, richer in sabinene and lower in myristicin than East Indian ones.

On the skin, nutmeg opens fresh, resinous and slightly pine-like, then turns warm, dry-spicy and woody, with a powdery touch. It is less sweet than cinnamon and often acts as a bridge between a citrus opening and a warm base. With bergamot, nutmeg feels bright and invigorating; with cedarwood or vetiver, dry and clear; with tonka or amber, warm and rounded.

In this selection, nutmeg sits in the fragrance pyramid – in our range slightly more often in the top note than in the heart note.

How the note behaves

Fresh & citrus

Nutmeg with bergamot, lemon or mandarin. Bright and invigorating, with a spicy core.

Spicy & woody

With cedarwood, vetiver or sandalwood. Dry, clear and quietly warm.

Warm & ambery

With tonka, amber or vanilla. Rounded and soft, ideal for cool evenings.

Curious factUnder the Treaty of Breda in 1667, England gave the Dutch the tiny nutmeg island of Run in the Banda Islands – and kept Manhattan, formerly New Amsterdam, in return.

Nutmeg is a true nut.

MYTH

Myth. Botanically, nutmeg is not a nut but the seed of the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans).

Statement 2

Grenada’s national flag features a nutmeg.

TRUTH

True. Grenada’s flag, adopted in 1974, shows a stylised, split-open nutmeg fruit.

Statement 3

Mace and nutmeg come from different plants.

MYTH

Myth. Both spices come from the same fruit: mace is the seed covering that wraps around the nutmeg.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between nutmeg and mace?

Both come from the same fruit of the nutmeg tree. Nutmeg is the seed; mace is the red seed covering that wraps around it like a net. Mace is dried separately and loses its vivid red colour in the process.

Where does the nutmeg oil used in perfumery come from?

The main producers are Indonesia and Grenada. West Indian oils from Grenada smell milder and less spicy than East Indian ones. They contain more sabinene and less α-pinene and myristicin.

Does nutmeg in perfume smell the way it does in the kitchen?

Not quite. The distilled oil opens fresher and more resinous than the grated spice, with a pine-like top before the warm spiciness comes through. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
