Gris Charnel or Extrait? What you smell – and when to wear which

Grey Parisian sky, warm skin beneath it. That is exactly what the name says: “Gris Charnel” translates roughly as “sensual, carnal grey”. Gris Charnel by BDK Parfums is the fragrance that leads many people into the world of niche perfumery in the first place. And then comes the question we hear almost every day: “And the Extrait? Is it just stronger?” No. Gris Charnel Extrait tells the same Parisian night – just a few hours later, when the lights are dimmed and the conversations grow quieter.

In short
  • What does Gris Charnel smell like? Like chai in a Parisian café: cardamom, milky fig and black tea over powdery iris, earthy vetiver and creamy sandalwood. Woody, powdery, calm.
  • What does Gris Charnel Extrait smell like? The same opening, but spicier and more “electric”, then more resinous and darker: cistus, patchouli, Madagascan vanilla and cedarwood make it amber-woody and more sensual.
  • Which one when? The original for the office, daytime and travel – close to the skin, never overbearing. The Extrait for evenings, dates, cold days and every moment in which you would like to be noticed.
  • Who is behind them? Both were created by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui (Mane) for BDK Parfums, Paris: the original in 2019, the Extrait in 2022.

Why this duo is so sought after

Gris Charnel is no longer an insider tip. On Fragrantica, more than 9,700 people have rated the original, and the Extrait adds another 4,300 votes. According to the trade magazine Premium Beauty News, Gris Charnel – as both Eau de Parfum and Extrait – is the house's bestseller, ahead of Rouge Smoking and Pas Ce Soir. For a brand founded only in 2016 that now exports to 58 countries, that is quite a career.

So the bar for the Extrait was high. According to Fragrantica, Mathilde Bijaoui said that revisiting a perfume that has already found its audience is much more difficult than starting from a blank page. And founder David Benedek explicitly did not want simply a more concentrated version, but to bring the spicy and woody facets to the fore.

What you smell

Gris Charnel: tea in a café, cashmere on the skin

Picture a grey November afternoon in Paris, a small café by the Palais-Royal, a glass of chai on the table. That is how many Fragrantica users describe the opening: cardamom, fresh and almost minty-cool, with milky-green fig and dry black tea. Beneath lie powdery iris and earthy Bourbon vetiver, and at the very bottom creamy Indian sandalwood and tonka. BDK itself calls the original “woody and powdery”, between elegance and sensuality. The magazine Nose Paris sums it up neatly: “Ni trop sombre, ni trop léger” – neither too dark nor too light.

How it feels on the skin: a soft grey cashmere jumper. Gris Charnel never pushes itself forward, it keeps you company. That is exactly why so many people wear it as a signature scent, whatever their gender.

Gris Charnel Extrait: same city, later hour

In the Extrait, the cup of tea has become a glass at the bar. The cardamom is far more present – Nose Paris calls the opening “presque électrique”, almost electric. The slightly salty, foamy note that Fragrantica describes in the original steps back. In its place come cistus (resinous, warm, a hint of leather), Indonesian patchouli (earthy and dark), Madagascan vanilla and cedarwood. BDK consistently classifies the Extrait as “amber woody”. According to Mathilde Bijaoui, it was ultimately the patchouli that “changed everything” and gave the Extrait the power she was looking for.

How it feels on the skin: the same cashmere, but now as a long coat, in the evening, collar turned up. Nose Paris sees in the patchouli precisely the “carnal, hypnotic dimension that the name promised”.

Did you know?

The “Bourbon” in Bourbon vetiver has nothing to do with whiskey. It goes back to the old name of the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean: Île Bourbon. Bourbon vanilla owes its name to the same island. In the Extrait, incidentally, BDK sources the vetiver and vanilla from Madagascar, Réunion's next-door neighbour.

A journey through time on the skin

What does Gris Charnel smell like after four hours? And what is left of the Extrait on your scarf the next morning? This is how BDK, specialist magazines and the Fragrantica community describe the development of the two versions:

Gris Charnel (Eau de Parfum)

  • The first few minutesCool cardamom, milky fig, dry black tea. Bright and spicy, a little like chai with oat milk.
  • After 1 hourThe iris lays a powdery veil over everything, the vetiver adds an earthy, slightly smoky edge. This is when it is at its most elegant.
  • After 4 hoursCreamy sandalwood and tonka take over. Many users describe Gris Charnel now moving close to the skin and becoming more of a skin scent.
  • In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA soft, woody-powdery whisper – quiet, clean, like a favourite jumper.

Gris Charnel Extrait (Extrait de Parfum)

  • The first few minutesMore cardamom, almost “electric”, with tea and cedarwood appearing early. Spicier and more structured than the original.
  • After 1 hourIris and resinous cistus merge with vetiver. The scent turns warmer and darker, the fig feels rounder.
  • After 4 hoursThe creamy fig-sandalwood note returns, now carried by vanilla, tonka and earthy patchouli. This is exactly where many users praise its longevity and projection.
  • In the evening / on your scarf the next morningVanilla, patchouli and woods: ambery, soft, sensual. The trail you catch yourself sniffing on your scarf in the morning.

The note pyramids compared

BDK's official notes show that the top and heart stay almost the same – the real transformation happens underneath. New marks what the original does not have.

What do you get for your money?

The honest answer first: the Extrait does not replace the original. If you love exactly that quiet, powdery elegance, the Eau de Parfum is all you need. The Extrait is for anyone who wants to experience the same idea warmer, darker and with more presence – with additional raw materials such as patchouli, vanilla absolute and cistus.

What the community says: For the original, many praise the cosy, chai-like warmth, its versatility and the drydown, in which sandalwood and tonka keep getting better. The most common criticism: projection and longevity are rather restrained, and for some it becomes a skin scent after a few hours. A few find it too much in hot weather. For the Extrait, many praise the smoother, richer texture, the longer wear and frequent compliments. More critical voices find the tea and fig opening bitter or a little sharp, and others consider it overhyped. Everyone agrees on one thing: both behave a little differently on every skin. Our tip: test them side by side on your skin, not on paper.

The story of BDK Parfums

Paris, 2016. David Benedek, born in Paris in 1989, founds his own perfume house in his mid-twenties, in the neighbourhood around the Palais-Royal. Fragrance runs in the family: according to BDK, his grandparents went into exile from Transylvania and, in the 1950s, were among the first in Paris to be authorised to distribute great houses such as Worth and Christian Dior. In 1959 they opened their first perfumery. At the age of ten, young David was already drawing perfume bottles in the family living room.

In 2012 Benedek joined the Institut Français de la Mode, specialised in perfume and cosmetics and learned the principles of perfumery with the Givaudan teams. His concept for BDK: an olfactory library. Each fragrance starts from a single raw material, the concentrates are made in the Grasse region, and the boxes are bound like books.

Gris Charnel Extrait by BDK Parfums – bottle from the Collection Parisienne

Today BDK comprises several collections: the Collection Parisienne with classics such as Rouge Smoking, Pas Ce Soir and Bouquet de Hongrie, the Collection Matières with fragrances such as Velvet Tonka, the sunny Collection Azur and the Collection Exclusive. You will find the whole world of BDK in our BDK Parfums collection.

Curiosities around BDK and Gris Charnel

What you probably did not know about the Parisian fragrance house

  1. A cap like the Grand Palais

According to the brand, the domed cap of the BDK bottles is a tribute to the glass dome of the Grand Palais. It is made by a traditional goldsmith and jeweller in the Paris region.

  2. Glass that goes through fire

The bevelled bottles come from a glassmaker in Normandy and are fire-polished after forming. The labels are applied by hand and printed in Bordeaux.

  3. Back to the Rue Saint-Honoré

The grandparents opened their perfumery on the Rue Saint-Honoré in 1959. BDK's first own boutique is on the very same street today, at number 312 – and a dedicated fragrance was created for its opening: 312 Saint-Honoré.

  4. A resin from goats' beards

Cistus, new in the Extrait, is the plant behind the resin labdanum. In antiquity it was collected by combing the beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had grazed among the sticky shrubs. On Crete, shepherds were still drawing rake-like tools fitted with leather thongs through the bushes in the 19th century.

  5. Harder than a blank page

Mathilde Bijaoui openly admitted that reinterpreting a successful fragrance is harder than starting from scratch. Her solution came late: the patchouli.

For fragrance nerds: 5 facts about Gris Charnel Extrait
  • 30 % perfume oil. According to BDK, Gris Charnel Extrait has a concentration of 30 %. An Eau de Parfum is usually well below that, roughly in the range of 15 to 20 %. More oil does not automatically mean more volume, though: above all it changes how long and how densely a scent sits on the skin.
  • The fig is an accord. BDK itself calls it a “fig accord”: the milky-green fig scent is rebuilt from several building blocks, because the fruit cannot be meaningfully distilled.
  • Absolutes, not shortcuts. According to BDK, Moroccan iris absolute, Madagascan vanilla absolute and tonka absolute are among the Extrait's raw materials.
  • Cedarwood from the USA. The essential oil of American cedar brings the dry, pencil-shaving structure that makes the Extrait feel woodier from early on.
  • The same signature. Both versions are by Mathilde Bijaoui (Mane). That explains why the Extrait instantly feels like Gris Charnel despite its new base.
