The Best Warm Scents by Xerjoff: Honey, Rum and Oud

Outside it gets dark earlier; inside it is time for scents that glow. If any house knows how to bottle warmth, it is Xerjoff from Turin. We looked at our sales figures and picked three of the best-selling warm, oriental-ambery Xerjoff scents you can find at our shop: one tastes of honey and Sicily, one of rum and rock 'n' roll, one of oud and Alexandria. Which of them will be your winter scent?

In short
  • Naxos (2015): honey, tobacco leaf, cinnamon and vanilla over lavender and lemon. The cosiest of the three and our best-selling Xerjoff.
  • Tony Iommi Monkey Special (2021): rum, passion fruit, cinnamon, leather and caramel. The loudest of the three, for evenings with a stage.
  • Alexandria II Anniversary (2024): rose, cardamom, Tarakan oud, iris and sandalwood. The most refined of the three, for grand entrances.
  • What they share: a warm base of vanilla, resins or woods and a generous dose of spice.

What makes a scent oriental-ambery?

In perfumery, “amber” is not a single raw material but a mood: warm, resinous, slightly sweet, often with vanilla, balsams, resins such as labdanum and spices. This used to be called “oriental”; today many houses prefer “ambery”. The feeling is the same: a scent that glows on the skin rather than sparkles. Xerjoff speaks this language like few other houses, partly thanks to its fondness for spices. Two of our three candidates carry cinnamon in the heart. Why the spice works so well is explained in the fragrance glossary entry on cinnamon, and the story of the house in our portrait of Xerjoff.

Naxos: why does it smell of honey and tobacco?

Naxos by Xerjoff from the 1861 collection, bottle

Naxos belongs to the 1861 collection, named after the year of Italian unification, and is Xerjoff's declaration of love to Sicily: sunshine, baroque facades, deep blue sea. Sounds like summer, but it smells like an evening by the fire. The opening is surprisingly fresh, lemon, bergamot and lavender, plus, according to Xerjoff, Omani incense. Then the mood shifts: in the heart, honey and cinnamon melt together, carried by jasmine sambac and cashmeran. Tobacco leaf, tonka bean and vanilla wait in the base.

The result is a scent that makes you think of a plate of warm cannoli next to a cigar box, only more elegant. On Fragrantica the “sweet” accord leads, closely followed by “honey” and “vanilla”, and 4.49 out of 5 points from more than 21,000 votes is an impressive score. People praise the addictive drydown and its versatility. The criticism: some find it too sweet, and the lavender opening is a little edgy at first. Our tip: two sprays, not five.

Did you know?

Naxos has been our best-selling Xerjoff scent over the past twelve months, ahead of all the new releases.

Tony Iommi Monkey Special: what does rock 'n' roll smell like?

Tony Iommi Monkey Special by Xerjoff, bottle

Tony Iommi, guitarist of Black Sabbath, is considered one of the fathers of heavy metal. In 2021 he was the first partner of Xerjoff's Blends line, and Monkey Special is the result: according to Xerjoff, the spirit of late-1960s rock 'n' roll translated into scent. The perfume even came with its own track, “Scent of Dark”, with Sergio Momo on second guitar.

The opening is a glass of rum with bergamot, Bulgarian geranium and a splash of passion fruit. The heart gets grittier: cinnamon, leather and patchouli from Singapore. The base of caramel, labdanum, sandalwood, musk and vanilla rings on like a long chord after the concert. Fragrantica names Chris Maurice as the perfumer; the strongest accords are warm spicy, woody and sweet, and the rating stands at 4.27 out of 5 from almost 4,900 votes.

Fans praise the boozy patchouli note and a presence that fills a room. To be fair: this is not a scent for the library. Some find it too spicy and too sweet, and after a long day it can become tiring. For a concert, a bar or the first frost, though, it is perfect.

Alexandria II Anniversary: what is special about oud from Tarakan?

Alexandria II Anniversary by Xerjoff from the Oud Stars collection, bottle

Since 2012, Alexandria II has been one of the classics of the Oud Stars collection, inspired by ancient Arabian perfumery and by Alexandria as a crossroads of cultures and trade. The 2024 anniversary version goes one step further. It opens with Bulgarian rose, cardamom, cumin and lavender, spicy and almost a little austere.

The heart is a spice bazaar: amber, clary sage, cypriol, mint, wormwood, iris from Tuscany, a civet facet and oud from Tarakan. According to Xerjoff, this oud is gathered in the jungle of Borneo and gives the scent its strong presence. In the base, Australian sandalwood, musk and vanilla from Madagascar calm everything down into a powdery, warm shimmer. On Fragrantica the leading accords are oud, powdery and aromatic, and the rating is 4.30 out of 5.

Reviewers praise its depth, complexity and longevity. A few report an animalic opening that settles after a few minutes, and of course the price is a topic. If you love oud, you will find one of the finest examples in our range here.

And if it can be even spicier?

Two insider tips from the same warm zone: Starlight from the Spotlight collection is a cardamom scent with almond, cinnamon and amber, rated 4.41 out of 5 on Fragrantica (50 ml: € 240). Curiosities from the Xerjoff spice cabinet

What lies behind the three warm-makers

  1. A song for a perfume

Monkey Special came with the track “Scent of Dark”. Xerjoff founder Sergio Momo plays guitar on it, alongside Tony Iommi.

  2. Sicily in autumn

Naxos was also the name of the first Greek settlement on Sicily, founded in the 8th century BC. Even so, the scent is best suited to the cold season. A summer holiday to spray on when the fog rolls in.

  3. Oud from the jungle

According to Xerjoff, the oud in Alexandria II Anniversary comes from Tarakan on Borneo, where it is gathered deep in the rainforest.

  4. Rum on top, caramel at the base

Monkey Special spans the distance from cocktail to dessert. No wonder so many describe it as “boozy”.

  5. Cinnamon twice

Naxos and Monkey Special both carry cinnamon in the heart. In Naxos it merges with honey, in Monkey Special with leather.

For fragrance nerds: 5 facts about the warm Xerjoff scents

  • Chris Maurice is named on Fragrantica as the perfumer of Monkey Special and the original Alexandria II.
  • Tarakan is an island off the east coast of Borneo in Indonesia.
