Who is Father Frost?
Father Frost, in Russian Ded Moroz, literally “Grandfather Frost”, is a figure from Slavic folk tradition. Originally he was the embodiment of winter itself: stern, powerful and sometimes moody, like the cold of Eastern Europe. In fairy tales such as “Morozko” he rewards diligence and kindness and punishes arrogance. In the late 19th century the winter spirit became a friendly bringer of gifts.
His appearance: a long white beard, a floor-length coat and a magic staff. Traditionally the coat is icy blue or silver-grey, like hoarfrost on fir needles. The red version came later, partly under Western influence. It is exactly this ice-blue tradition that the Inge-Glas ornament takes up.
Father Frost does not travel alone. At his side is his granddaughter Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, who helps him hand out the presents.
How is Father Frost different from Santa Claus?
| Father Frost | Santa Claus | |
|---|---|---|
| When | On New Year's Eve | On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning |
| Companions | Granddaughter Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden | Reindeer, elves or Knecht Ruprecht |
| Coat | Traditionally ice blue or silver, often floor-length | Usually red with white fur |
| Transport | Troika, a sleigh drawn by three horses | Sleigh with reindeer |
| Attribute | Magic staff | Sack of presents |
Father Frost became the New Year's messenger because of 20th-century history. In the Soviet Union Christmas was pushed aside and replaced by a grand New Year's festival with a decorated fir tree. Father Frost stayed and became the central figure of this festival. To this day he is the gift-bringer of New Year's Eve in many countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
What does the 2026 annual ornament look like?
Inge-Glas has modelled Father Frost in his classic attire: an ice-blue coat with glittering fur trim and white snowflakes, and in his hand a sparkling staff with a snowflake. The face with its flowing white beard is painted by hand, as with all Inge-Glas figures. Turn him around and the year 2026 shines on his back in deep-blue glitter. That makes every piece a memento of exactly this Christmas.
Like every piece from the manufactory in Neustadt near Coburg, he is mouth-blown, silvered inside with sterling silver and finished with the golden star crown. The silver inside makes the ice blue glow as if the light came from within. The ornament is delivered in a fine wooden box, ideal for storing and for giving.
Why are annual ornaments sought-after collectibles?
Because they only appear once. An annual ornament is made for a single year and carries its number. Once it is sold out, it is not reproduced. Buy one every year and over time you build your own family chronicle on the Christmas tree: the year the first child arrived, the year of the move, the year of the wedding. Inge-Glas does not publish an exact edition size. In the manufactory's own online shop, Father Frost is already marked as sold out. We still have a few pieces.

How do I show off Father Frost on the Christmas tree?
Ice blue calls for company that heightens the wintry mood. Three ideas from our boutique:
- Frosty white: Combine him with the Frosty Christmas tree and silver baubles. Add warm white lights, and the tree looks like the morning after a clear winter night.
- Fairy-tale: Hang him next to Snowman Frostnase and fairy-tale figures such as Mother Holle, who is also in charge of snow.
- Solo at eye level: A collector's piece deserves a place of honour. Hang Father Frost at eye level on a well-lit branch, so the year is visible as he turns.
Curiosities about Father Frost
From winter spirit to collectible
- A grandfather, not a father
Literally, Ded Moroz means “Grandfather Frost”. In German and English, the affectionate “Father” has nevertheless stuck.
- Family in the snow
His companion Snegurochka is his granddaughter. The Snow Maiden has a fairy tale of her own.
- Travelling by troika
Instead of reindeer, Father Frost traditionally travels in a three-horse sleigh, the troika.
- Blue is the original
The ice-blue coat of the Inge-Glas ornament is true to tradition. Father Frost has only worn red more often in recent times.
- The number on his back
The glittering 2026 on the back makes the ornament a dated collector's item, like an annual coin for the Christmas tree.
