Sospiro perfume: a sigh, an opera and plenty of green velvet
A perfume house that takes its name from a sigh, names its fragrances like arias and wraps every bottle in velvet. Sospiro may well be the most musical brand on our shelves, and with Vibrato one of its fragrances sits right at the top of our bestseller list. Who is behind Sospiro, what does the house have to do with Xerjoff, and why does the bottle feel like a butterfly’s wing?
- What: Sospiro is a niche perfume house, founded in Italy in 2011. The name is Italian and means sigh.
- Origin: At its launch in 2011, Sospiro was announced as a new line from the Xerjoff circle. Since 2022 the brand has been writing its new chapter from Dubai.
- Typical: fragrances named after music and opera, built “like classical music, in movements”, plus velvet-covered bottles with a gold-coloured cap.
- Where to start: Vibrato for fresh citrus elegance, Il Padrino for rum, amaretto and amber, Dolce Melodia for juicy fruit with vanilla.
What does Sospiro mean?
Sospiro is the Italian word for sigh, derived from the Latin suspirium. A lovely name for a perfume, if you think about it: a sigh is the moment you breathe in deeply, pause for a second and then let go. That small, involuntary “ahh” is exactly what the brand wants to trigger with the first spray.
Music is not just in the name. Sospiro describes itself as an Italian maison that composes fragrance the way Italy composes music: as opera, as symphony, in movements. The scents are called Vibrato, Basso, Mezzo, Contralto, Bel Canto, Prima Donna or Opera Grande. Smelling your way through the collection is a bit like walking through an opera house, from the bass to the diva.

Who is behind Sospiro?
The honest answer: the brand itself names no founder on its website. It only says that Sospiro was founded in Italy in 2011 and that a new chapter began in 2022, “from Dubai onto a global stage”. It gets interesting when you look back to 2011. That year, the luxury portal 2luxury2 announced Sospiro as a new line from the Turin niche house Xerjoff, with six fragrances in one go: Accento, Allegro, Capriccio, Duetto, Laylati and Vivace. Several retailers and trade portals therefore name Xerjoff founder Sergio Momo as the mind behind the idea. We have not found an official confirmation from the brand.
Today the company operates as Sospiro International Perfume Trading in Dubai, according to the member directory of the duty-free association TFWA. The Italian signature has remained, and two people shape the current chapter in particular:
The creative headSalah Alzarooni
According to Sospiro, the creative force behind the house’s current chapter, based in Dubai. For Il Padrino (2025), Fragrantica credits him as perfumer together with Nathalie Templer.
The master perfumerChristian Provenzano
More than 50 years in the profession and the first Master Perfumer at the fragrance house CPL Aromas. According to Sospiro, Vibrato, Opera Grande, Maraschino and Erba Leather are his work.
Portraits: Sospiro
Christian Provenzano deserves a second look. Sospiro describes his signature as “structure”: bright openings that resolve into long, polished, musky-woody bases. According to Fragrantica he also composed Basso, Dolce Melodia and Erba Pura Magica, so many of the Sospiro fragrances that are popular with us. He also has a fragrance line under his own name, which you will find in our Christian Provenzano collection. If you love Vibrato, it is well worth a sniff.
What does Sospiro have to do with Xerjoff?
More than the bottles reveal at first glance, and less than some forums claim. What is documented is the shared start: in 2011 Sospiro appeared as a line from the Xerjoff circle. The most elegant proof of the family ties is a name you may know. Fragrantica lists a Sospiro fragrance called Erba Pura from 2013, which has since been discontinued. Today the name is best known from a bestseller from Turin: Erba Pura by Xerjoff. Sospiro itself revived the Erba idea with Erba Pura Magica (2022), which has since grown into a whole Erba family with an oud and a leather version.
How Xerjoff itself came about, with meteorite dust and rock ’n’ roll fragrances, is told in our portrait of Xerjoff from Turin.
Whether Sospiro still belongs to Xerjoff today is not answered by any official source. In 2020, forums were rumouring the end of the brand. The opposite happened: Sospiro now lists six collections and presented a new fragrance, Il Padrino, in 2025.
Why is the Sospiro bottle covered in velvet?
Because it is meant to feel like a butterfly’s wing. That is how the brand itself describes it. The butterfly is the house’s emblem, a symbol of love that, according to the brand, carries its “gold dust” from one person to the next. Romantic? Absolutely. But also practical: hardly any bottle sits so well in the hand or is so easy to spot on a shelf.
Each collection has its colour. Vibrato and Basso wear fir green, Dolce Melodia glows sunny yellow, Il Padrino is dressed in deep brown, and the Red Collection is, unsurprisingly, red. On top always sits the same heavy, gold-coloured cap. Its two curves are reminiscent of a seated butterfly with slightly raised wings. A protective ring below the spray head keeps any running perfume away from the velvet.
What do Sospiro fragrances smell like?
Generous. In its own words, Sospiro composes “in movements”, like a symphony, and oud is only one instrument among many. You can tell: most of the fragrances open bright and fruity, turn floral or spicy in the heart and settle on a warm base of woods, amber and musk. Not a house for delicate skin scents, more for people who like to leave a little echo in the room. All fragrances in the Classica line are Eau de Parfum in 100 ml.
Three examples from the official fragrance pyramids:
- Vibrato (2022): grapefruit, bergamot, mandarin, ginger and rosemary, then magnolia, Damask rose and blond woods, carried by vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, musk, amber and tonka.
- Il Padrino (2025): dark rum, amaretto, blackcurrant and bergamot, then patchouli, dry amber and sandalwood, and finally labdanum, vanilla wood and Siam benzoin. A fragrance for evenings by the fire that never feels heavy.
- Basso (2022): grapefruit meets carnation, mayflower and labdanum, and the base is a whole orchestra of woods with sandalwood, vetiver, guaiac, cedar and oakmoss, spiced with black and pink pepper.

Which three fruity Sospiro fragrances our customers buy most often, and how they differ on the skin, is explained in The best fruity fragrances from Sospiro.
Which collections does Sospiro have?
The official website currently lists six: Classica (the opera line with Vibrato, Basso and Il Padrino), Erba (fruity and fresh, with Erba Pura Magica, Erba Oud and Erba Leather), Red (cherry-red bottles with Maraschino and Dolce Sonata), Exclusive, Nero and the 15 ml miniatures. The minis have the same silhouette as the large bottles, just pocket-sized.
Our tip for anyone who wants to get to know Sospiro without buying 100 ml straight away: the 15 ml size, for example Vibrato in 15 ml for € 65. With us, the Vibrato minis actually sell slightly more often than the large bottle, as travel companions and as gifts.
