Fragrance note

Apple Perfumes

Apple brings a crisp, juicy freshness to the top notes – from green and tart to red and sweet. Because the fruit yields no scent oil, the note is recreated from fruity scent building blocks. Here you will find every perfume with apple in its pyramid.

Hexyl acetate and ethyl 2-methylbutyrate: the molecules in apple

The cultivated apple (Malus domestica) belongs to the rose family. Its most important wild ancestor is the Asian wild apple (Malus sieversii), which still grows in the mountain forests of the Tian Shan in Kazakhstan; the European crab apple has also contributed to its genome. There is no apple essential oil for perfumery – the scent is rebuilt from individual molecules. The fruit itself is the model: several hundred volatile compounds have been found in apples, and the ripe scent is shaped above all by esters. Among the most important are hexyl acetate (C₈H₁₆O₂), with a juicy apple-pear tone, and ethyl 2-methylbutyrate (C₇H₁₄O₂), with green, fruity freshness. Green accents come from cis-3-hexenol (C₆H₁₂O), which smells of freshly cut grass. Damascenone, a rose ketone, adds warmth with a sweet apple undertone.

In a fragrance, apple is crisp, juicy and bright – green and tart or round and sweet, depending on the accord. It opens a composition with lively freshness. With bergamot or mint it feels clear and zesty, with rose or peach fruity and floral, with cinnamon or vanilla warm like a baked apple.

In this selection, apple sits in the fragrance pyramid – mostly in the top note.

How the note behaves

With rose, lily of the valley or peach. Juicy, round and charming.

Warm & sweet

Curious factDamascenone, an aroma molecule with a sweet apple undertone, was discovered while analysing Bulgarian rose oil.

Apple notes are made from an essential oil extracted from apples.

MYTH

Myth. There is no apple oil usable in perfumery. The scent is rebuilt from individual molecules.

Statement 2

Apple and rose belong to the same plant family.

TRUTH

True. Botanically, the apple belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae).

Statement 3

Our cultivated apple descends solely from the wild apple of Central Asia.

MYTH

Myth. The Asian wild apple (Malus sieversii) is the most important ancestor. On its way to Europe, however, the European crab apple (Malus sylvestris) also made a substantial contribution to its genome.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a natural apple oil for perfume?

No. Apples do not yield an essential oil for perfumery. The apple scent is therefore built as an accord from individual aroma molecules – above all fruity esters of the kind also found in the fruit.

Why does apple smell green in one perfume and sweet in another?

It depends on the building blocks. Green notes such as cis-3-hexenol and the green, fruity ethyl 2-methylbutyrate suggest a fresh, tart apple. Rose ketones such as damascenone, by contrast, add a warm, sweet depth.

How long does apple last on the skin?

Apple is a typical top note and shapes above all the first impression of a fragrance. Its freshness stays noticeable for longer when musk, woods or vanilla support it. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
