Is oakmoss really a moss?
No. Oakmoss is a lichen, a symbiosis of a fungus and an alga. It grows on the bark of oaks and other trees and is gathered by hand for perfumery.
Why is the use of oakmoss in perfume limited?
Natural oakmoss contains atranol and chloroatranol, two potent contact allergens. IFRA therefore requires extracts with less than 100 ppm each of atranol and chloroatranol and limits them to 0.1 % in fine fragrance. In the EU, both substances are banned in cosmetics, which is why low-atranol oakmoss is used.
What role does oakmoss play in a fragrance?
Oakmoss is a base note and acts as a fixative: it gives a composition depth and staying power. It forms the foundation of the chypre family and also shapes fougère fragrances. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
