Myth or truth?
Statement 1
Guaiac wood oil is obtained from the guaiacum tree Guaiacum officinale.
Myth. The perfumery oil mostly comes from Bulnesia sarmientoi from the Gran Chaco. Guaiacum officinale, lignum vitae, is a close relative but a different genus.
Statement 2
Pure guaiac wood oil is solid at room temperature.
True. Because of its high guaiol content it is solid to semi-solid and only melts at around 40 to 50 °C.
Statement 3
Palo santo always refers to the same wood.
Myth. “Palo santo” is the name of both Bulnesia sarmientoi, the source of guaiac wood oil, and the unrelated Bursera graveolens.

Where does guaiac wood for perfume come from?
Mostly from Bulnesia sarmientoi in the Gran Chaco of South America; Paraguay is the main producer. The oil is obtained by steam distillation of wood chips and sawdust. Because the species is listed in CITES Appendix II, exports require permits.
Why is guaiac wood oil solid at room temperature?
It contains a lot of guaiol, a sesquiterpene alcohol that is crystalline in its pure form. The oil is therefore solid to semi-solid and only melts at around 40 to 50 °C. It is gently warmed before use.
How long does guaiac wood last on the skin?
Guaiac wood is a typical base note and one of the very long-lasting materials. It remains noticeable for a very long time and anchors more volatile notes. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
