DISCOVER BLACKCURRANT PERFUMESFrequently asked questions
Why does blackcurrant sometimes smell of cat?
It comes down to sulphur-containing molecules called thiols, such as 4-methoxy-2-methyl-2-butanethiol. In tiny traces they smell of ripe blackcurrant; at higher concentrations, distinctly of cat. Good compositions keep this facet in balance.
What does buchu have to do with blackcurrant?
Buchu is a South African shrub whose leaves yield an essential oil. It contains p-menthan-8-thiol-3-one, a thiol with a blackcurrant character. Perfumers use it to reinforce the green, minty side of cassis.
Is blackcurrant a sweet fruity note?
Not necessarily. The natural bud absolute is rather green, tart and slightly sulphurous; only at very low doses does it reveal its syrupy, fruity side. In chypres and green fragrances, blackcurrant feels fresh and unisex. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
