Enigma Pour Homme EdP or Parfum? What You Smell – and When to Wear Which

A man at the bar of a private members' club. Cognac in his glass, cigar smoke in the air, wood and leather all around – and an outfit that clearly breaks the dress code. Nobody knows how he got in. That is how Roja Parfums tells the story of Enigma Pour Homme. And as befits an "enigma", it comes in two versions: Enigma Pour Homme EdP in a 100 ml bottle and Enigma Parfum Pour Homme in a 50 ml bottle. What do you smell in each – and when should you reach for which?

In short
  • What is Enigma Pour Homme? A warm, spicy men's fragrance from Roja Parfums (London, 2013), built around cognac, tobacco, vanilla, benzoin and heliotrope.
  • What does the EdP smell like? Brighter and fizzier: lemon and mandarin open alongside the bergamot, then it turns vanillic and powdery. The more versatile of the two.
  • What does the Parfum smell like? Denser and darker: cognac, ginger and tobacco come forward sooner, it stays closer to the skin and becomes dry and tobacco-rich over the hours.
  • Which one when? The EdP for the office, weddings and autumn days; the Parfum for fireside evenings, late bars and moments when only one person should smell you.

Why this pair?

Enigma Pour Homme is one of the house's most discussed fragrances. On Fragrantica, more than 2,200 people have rated the original 2013 entry, and the "Parfum Cologne" version released in 2019 adds more than 1,800 votes. That is over 4,000 ratings for a fragrance that was never meant for the mass market: at its launch in June 2013 it was available in London at Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and directly from Roja.

At the same time, hardly any Roja fragrance has such confusing names. Enigma, Creation-E, Parfum Cologne, EdP, Parfum – forums and shops mix them all up. Time to solve the riddle. If you would like to know more about the man behind the name, you will find his portrait in our article The aromatic odyssey of ROJA Parfums.

"The EdP is Enigma with the window open. The Parfum is Enigma behind closed doors, late at night in the club."

Team 4D OUTFITTERS, Bregenz

What you smell

The shared character: Picture a balloon glass of cognac, next to it a bowl of vanilla custard, a box of cigars on the table. In its "Perfumer's Insight", Roja describes an unusual effect: the powdery, cherry-like tones of heliotrope meet vanilla and benzoin – and appear to "fizz", while the cognac turns it all into a "delicious cocktail". Ginger, cardamom and pepper give the tobacco a "hot spark". No wonder many Fragrantica reviewers think of cola in the opening: sweet, sparkling, spicy.

What changes in the EdP: According to the official notes, the Eau de Parfum also opens with lemon and mandarin. This makes the start airier, almost like a twist of orange zest over dessert. The community perceives this version as above all vanillic and powdery: on Fragrantica the vanilla accord ranks first, with tobacco much further back.

What changes in the Parfum: Only bergamot in the top, no extra citrus. From the very first minute it feels darker, boozier and spicier. The fragrance blog Kafkaesque, which reviewed the Parfum in detail, spoke of "Christmas plum pudding" – plum pudding with ginger, soaked in brandy. Over the hours it becomes drier, more tobacco-driven, almost leathery.

Did you know?

Roja officially recommends enjoying Enigma Pour Homme "alongside a fine Cuban cigar". A perfume house that has the smoking lounge in mind – rare. You don't have to smoke to wear it, though: the tobacco is already in the bottle.

A journey through time on your skin

What does Enigma smell like after one hour, after four hours, on your scarf the next morning? This is how Roja, experienced reviewers and the Fragrantica community describe the development of both versions:

Enigma Pour Homme EdP

  1. The first minutesBright citrus from bergamot, lemon and mandarin, with the sweet, fizzy "cola" effect of heliotrope, vanilla and a splash of cognac right underneath.
  2. After 1 hourThe citrus has gone. Heliotrope, jasmine and neroli form a powdery floral heart, vanilla and benzoin turn creamy. Soft and well-groomed.
  3. After 4 hoursVanilla, benzoin and sandalwood carry the scent, tobacco and spice shimmer in the background. Many now describe it as warm, sweet and close to the skin.
  4. In the evening / on your scarfA soft trail of vanilla, amber and a hint of powder. How long it lasts varies widely between users – from skin scent to "all day".

Enigma Parfum Pour Homme

  1. The first minutesBergamot only briefly, then straight to cognac and ginger, with cardamom and pepper. Dark fruit, Christmas spice – like plum pudding with brandy.
  2. After 1 hourThe vanilla builds up; Kafkaesque speaks of a "frothy mousse". The first wisps of tobacco drift in.
  3. After 4 hoursThe cognac has largely faded and tobacco takes the lead. Drier, woodier, with ginger and a trace of dried fruit. Close to the skin.
  4. In the evening / on your scarfMainly tobacco, almost leathery, with a flicker of benzoin. Kafkaesque noted around 10 to 12 hours of longevity – perfect for the scarf the next morning.

The note pyramids compared

Roja's official notes show that heart and base are identical; the difference lies in the opening and the concentration. EdP only marks what the Parfum doesn't have.

What do you get for your money?

The honest answer first: the Parfum is not a "better" version, just a different balance. If you want to wear Enigma in many situations, the EdP and its 100 ml will serve you very well. If you are after the dark cognac-and-tobacco side in concentrated form, choose the Parfum – a few sprays are enough.

What does the community say?

Fragrantica lists Enigma Pour Homme in two entries: the original 2013 entry (no concentration given; some reviews explicitly refer to the Parfum) and the 2019 "Parfum Cologne", the 100 ml version. The bars show the strongest accords as voted by the community (strongest accord = 100). As of 14 October 2026.

What the community says: With 4.58 out of 5, the original entry is one of the highest-rated fragrances in the entire Roja range. Reviewers praise the fizzy opening, the cognac-tobacco-vanilla drydown and the longevity, and many see it as a signature scent for special evenings. The main criticisms are the price, an opening some find too sweet and a drydown that a few consider too heavy or old-fashioned. Opinions on the 100 ml version are more divided: some find it fresher and easier to wear, others dislike the florals in the opening, the powder in the drydown or inconsistent performance. Most therefore advise: test first. We could not retrieve reliable Parfumo figures for either version on the reference date, so we only show Fragrantica here.

Your moment: which Enigma when?

Monday at the office

EdP

Two sprays, and the citrus opening keeps the sweetness in check. Warm enough for character, friendly enough for the meeting room.

Autumn wedding guest

EdP

Lots of people, lots of hugs: the brighter, vanillic EdP feels festive without overwhelming the mother of the bride.

First date, second drink

Parfum

It stays closer to the skin. Whoever gets close discovers cognac and tobacco – exactly the kind of mystery the name promises.

Ski hut and fireside evening

Parfum

Ginger, plum, cognac, wood: this is winter in a bottle. Snow outside, mulled-wine mood inside.

Late bar or cigar lounge

Parfum

This is its home. The man from Roja's story sits at exactly this bar.

Summer terrace

Honestly: neither, really

At 30 degrees, cognac and vanilla quickly feel heavy. If at all, then the EdP, sparingly, after sunset.

The Enigma family from Roja Parfums

London, June 2013. Roja Dove presented Enigma as a duo: a women's and a men's fragrance. At the time he explained that the mystery of the name drove him to create a fragrance that seems to be "all things to all people" – but is itself certain and assured. Right from the start, the men's fragrance came as a 100 ml version and as a concentrated Parfum in a 50 ml bottle.

Since then, Enigma has grown into a whole family. You will find the women's fragrance with us as Enigma Parfum Pour Femme and Enigma Essence de Parfum Pour Femme, and Enigma Aoud adds oud to the story. Discover the whole world of the house in our Roja Parfums collection.

Curiosities around Enigma

What lies behind cognac, tobacco and heliotrope

  1. One fragrance, two names

In the USA, Enigma was sold as "Creation-E" for trademark reasons. So if you read about Creation-E in American forums, you are reading about exactly the fragrance you know from us as Enigma.

  2. Three labels for one bottle

The 100 ml version arrived in 2013 as an Eau de Parfum and from 2019 as "Parfum Cologne" – Roja Dove's own concentration, as invigorating as a classic Eau de Cologne but with a long-lasting base. Today Roja lists this bottle as EDP again.

  3. The flower called "cherry pie"

Heliotrope comes from the Peruvian Andes. In English the plant is also called "cherry pie", because its blossoms smell of cherry pie and vanilla. Exactly this tone makes Enigma so gourmand.

  4. The fungus that lives on cognac

Around the ageing cellars in Cognac, walls and roofs turn black. The culprit is a fungus that feeds on evaporating alcohol – the "angels' share". In 1872 the pharmacist Antonin Baudoin had it examined; today it bears his name: Baudoinia compniacensis.

  5. Tobacco, the "queen's herb"

In 1560 the French envoy Jean Nicot sent tobacco from Lisbon to Catherine de' Medici – as a remedy for the ailments of her son, King Francis II, migraines among them. The plant was soon called "herbe à la Reine". Linnaeus later named the genus Nicotiana after Nicot.

  6. Legend: real cognac in the bottle?

Among fans, the story persists that Roja uses sediment from the oak casks of a cognac distillery. There is no proof – so we tell it as what it is: a beautiful legend.

For fragrance nerds: 5 facts about Enigma Pour Homme
  • Parfum vs. Eau de Parfum: a Parfum usually contains the highest share of perfume oil. That generally means more longevity, but not automatically more volume – Parfums often stay closer to the skin.
  • Parfum Cologne is not an industry standard but Roja Dove's own term: a fresh top like an Eau de Cologne, a structure like an Eau de Parfum.
  • Cognac is an accord in perfumery. The brandy effect is built from fruity, woody and slightly boozy building blocks.
  • Heliotrope is usually recreated in perfumery with the molecule heliotropin (piperonal): powdery, almond-like, vanillic.
  • Benzoin is a resin from the styrax tree. It smells balsamic and vanillic and holds the sweet base together.

Frequently asked questions about Enigma Pour Homme

What is the difference between Enigma Pour Homme EdP and Parfum?

According to Roja, the heart and base notes are identical. The EdP (100 ml) also opens with lemon and mandarin and feels brighter and more vanillic. The Parfum (50 ml) opens with bergamot only and feels denser, spicier and more tobacco-driven.

What does Enigma Pour Homme smell like after 4 hours?

The EdP then smells mainly of vanilla, benzoin and sandalwood with a touch of tobacco. The Parfum is drier and woodier: tobacco leads, with ginger and a trace of dark fruit.

Is Enigma Pour Homme Parfum Cologne the same as the EdP?

It is the 100 ml version. Roja sold it as "Parfum Cologne" from 2019 and lists it as EDP again today.

Is Creation-E the same as Enigma?

Yes. In the USA, Enigma was sold under the name Creation-E for trademark reasons.

When should you wear Enigma Pour Homme?

Ideally in autumn and winter. Thanks to its fresher start, the EdP also works at the office; the Parfum is an evening scent for bars, dinners and fireside nights.

Yes. With every fragrance order from 4D OUTFITTERS you receive a sample of the fragrance you ordered, and you can request up to four further free samples via the order note in the cart. Or test both versions in our boutique in Bregenz.
