Blue Talisman or Extrait? What you smell – and when to wear which

A pear, a talisman and a side project that became the star. When Ex Nihilo launched Blue Talisman in 2023 for its tenth birthday, the scent was meant as an anniversary greeting. Today, according to co-founder Benoît Verdier, it is the Parisian house’s bestseller – and since 2025 it also exists as Blue Talisman Extrait. The question many people have asked ever since: “Which one is mine?” The answer has less to do with percentages than with moments. So: what do you smell – and when do you wear which one?

In short
  • Blue Talisman (Eau de Parfum, 2023) smells of juicy pear, bergamot, mandarin and a touch of ginger over orange blossom, light woods and musk: fresh, radiant, clean.
  • Blue Talisman Extrait (2025) keeps the pear but adds jasmine sambac, sandalwood and vanilla: creamier, more floral, softer and warmer.
  • The difference: the Eau de Parfum is a sunny day, the Extrait the same day in golden evening light. Both were created by perfumer Jordi Fernández.
  • When to wear which? Eau de Parfum for the office, summer, travel and daytime. Extrait for dates, celebrations, cooler months and the evening.

Why this duo?

A few numbers: on Fragrantica, more than 6,300 people have already rated Blue Talisman – a remarkable figure for a niche house. The Extrait, although only released in 2025, already has more than 1,700 votes. And co-founder Benoît Verdier told Fragrantica that Blue Talisman actually started as a side project and ended up dethroning Fleur Narcotique, the house’s long-standing bestseller.

That is exactly why the comparison is worth it: anyone who loves Blue Talisman will eventually wonder whether the Extrait is “more of the same”. Spoiler: it is rather another chapter of the same story.

“I don’t think that high concentrations are necessarily more relevant or higher quality.”

Benoît Verdier, co-founder of Ex Nihilo, to Fragrantica

What you smell: Blue Talisman, the original

Imagine biting into a cool, ripe pear while someone next to you peels a mandarin. That is the first breath of Blue Talisman. Bergamot and a dash of ginger make the opening sparkle, almost like a dry pear cocktail. Underneath, orange blossom opens up – not creamy and heavy, but bright and airy. The rest is structure: Georgywood and Akigalawood bring modern, slightly peppery woods, Ambrofix creates the typical “glow”, and musk makes everything soft and close to the skin.

Ex Nihilo itself calls the fragrance a “hypnotic jewel” and a lucky charm for the skin, inspired by Place Vendôme, just a few steps from Rue Saint-Honoré, where Ex Nihilo has its Paris boutique. As a boutique that also carries fine jewellery, we particularly like that idea.

What changes in the Extrait

The Extrait feels as if the same pear had been wrapped in a cashmere jumper. The fruit is still there, but it no longer jumps at you – it nestles in. New in the heart is jasmine sambac, which together with orange blossom creates a white-floral, almost velvety shimmer. In the base, sandalwood and vanilla take over from the cooler woods, joined by amberwood, Ambrofix and musk.

Ex Nihilo describes the Extrait as a denser, more complex version that keeps the clear structure of the original. Many reviews in the Fragrantica community confirm this: creamier, sweeter, more amber and vanilla, more warmth. According to Verdier, Jordi Fernández and the house worked on this version for eight months.

A journey through time on the skin

What does Blue Talisman smell like after four hours? And what is left of the Extrait on your scarf the next morning? This is how the brand, the official notes and the community describe the development of both versions:

Blue Talisman (Eau de Parfum)

  1. The first minutesJuicy pear, bergamot and mandarin, plus a spark of ginger. Zesty, bright, almost fizzy.
  2. After 1 hourThe citrus freshness steps back, orange blossom and the woody-ambery Georgywood take over. The pear remains as a bright thread.
  3. After 4 hoursClean musk, Akigalawood and Ambrofix: a woody-mineral skin scent with radiance. Some find this phase soapy.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA quiet trace of musk and light woods, freshly washed rather than sweet. How long it lasts depends strongly on the skin, according to the community.

Blue Talisman Extrait

  1. The first minutesPear and bergamot again, but rounder and less zesty. The white flowers can be sensed early on.
  2. After 1 hourJasmine sambac and orange blossom in the foreground: white-floral, creamy, with a fruity undertone.
  3. After 4 hoursSandalwood and vanilla settle like a warm veil over the flowers. Many call this drydown the highlight.
  4. In the evening / on your scarf the next morningA soft echo of vanilla, sandalwood and amberwood – noticeably warmer and cosier than the original.

The note pyramids compared

A look at the official notes shows: the Extrait is not a louder original but a rebuilt one. New marks what is missing in the Eau de Parfum.

What this means: mandarin and ginger disappear from the opening, which makes the start calmer. Jasmine makes the heart more floral, and in the base sandalwood and vanilla move to the foreground, while the dry Georgywood is no longer listed in the Extrait’s pyramid. “Freshly washed” becomes “freshly showered and moisturised”.

What do you get for your money?

The honest answer: if you love exactly the zesty pear opening, you will often be happier with the Eau de Parfum. The Extrait is not “more of it” but a warmer, creamier interpretation.

What do Fragrantica and Parfumo say?

On Fragrantica, both versions score clearly above average, the Extrait even slightly higher. The main accords are telling: citrus leads in the original, white flowers and wood in the Extrait. As of 14 October 2026.

What the community says: the original is praised for its juicy pear-citrus opening, its unisex appeal and plenty of compliments, especially in spring and summer. More critical voices find the musk-Ambrofix drydown synthetic or soapy, consider the scent interchangeable or too expensive, and reports on longevity vary widely. With the Extrait, many praise the depth, the creaminess and the sandalwood-vanilla drydown. Criticism: some find it too sweet or too floral, and some think the two versions are too similar to own both. Our tip: test both on your skin, ideally on two different days.

For Parfumo, we could not verify rating data that clearly belongs to either version, so we do not show any values from there.

The story of Ex Nihilo

Paris, 2013. Three friends quit their jobs: Sylvie Loday, an engineer and formerly Global Account Manager at the fragrance giant Givaudan, Olivier Royère, previously a banker, and Benoît Verdier, formerly a marketing communications director. Verdier and Royère knew each other from the elite university Sciences Po. Together they founded a perfume house whose name says it all: ex nihilo, Latin for “out of nothing”.

The first boutique opened on Rue Saint-Honoré, in the heart of Paris’s luxury district. The perfumers get carte blanche, even with expensive raw materials. Fleur Narcotique became the first big success, later followed by fragrances such as Lust in Paradise, The Hedonist and Outcast Blue. According to Fragrantica, Ex Nihilo is now represented at almost 500 points of sale worldwide.

Did you know?

Ex Nihilo’s deep blue is no coincidence. According to Liberty London, the house colour refers to French traditions from architecture to culture – from the Élysée Palace to Air France. Blue Talisman even carries this blue in its name.

Curiosities around Blue Talisman

What lies behind the blue lucky charm

  1. The side project that toppled the queen

Blue Talisman was intended as an anniversary scent for the tenth birthday. According to co-founder Benoît Verdier, this “side project” ended up replacing Fleur Narcotique as the house’s number one.

  2. A jewel for the skin

Ex Nihilo calls Blue Talisman a “hypnotic jewel” and a lucky charm for the skin. The inspiration: Place Vendôme, the most famous jewellery square in Paris – a few steps from the house’s Paris boutique.

  3. Wood from patchouli leftovers

Akigalawood, the peppery-woody building block in the original, is not a tree. Givaudan lets enzymes from fermentation processes act on patchouli oil residues. The material has been on the palette of Givaudan’s perfumers since 2014.

  4. Amber from sugar cane

Ambrofix, which provides radiance in both versions, is made by fermenting sugar cane, according to Givaudan. Per kilo, this requires a hundred times less land than traditional production.

  5. Eight months for an Extrait

According to Verdier, Jordi Fernández and Ex Nihilo worked on the Extrait for eight months. The two go back a long way: their collaboration spans more than twenty fragrances, starting in 2018 with a Harrods exclusive.

  6. A robot called the Osmologue

In the Paris boutique, an in-house, high-precision dosing machine called the “Osmologue” blends personalised scents in a matter of minutes – and customers watch their creation being bottled before their very eyes. According to reports, the caps came in mother of pearl, onyx or buffalo horn.

For fragrance nerds: 5 facts about Blue Talisman
  • Concentration: according to Fragrantica, the Extrait contains 30% perfume oil. Ex Nihilo does not give a figure for the Eau de Parfum; eaux de parfum are usually considerably lower.
  • Quintessence is Ex Nihilo’s line of extraits: according to the brand, the “most radical version” of its iconic fragrances, including Fleur Narcotique and The Hedonist.
  • Georgywood is a woody-ambery building block from Givaudan that gives the original its modern, dry woodiness. In the Extrait, sandalwood and amberwood take over.
  • Jasmine sambac (Jasminum sambac), also known as Arabian jasmine, is a different species from the classic Grasse jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum). It gives the Extrait its white-floral shimmer.
  • Jordi Fernández is Vice President of Perfumery at Givaudan, the company co-founder Sylvie Loday used to work for.

Frequently asked questions about Blue Talisman and Blue Talisman Extrait

What is the difference between Blue Talisman and Blue Talisman Extrait?

Blue Talisman (2023) is fresh, fruity and radiant with pear, bergamot, mandarin, ginger, orange blossom and musk. The Extrait (2025) keeps pear and orange blossom but adds jasmine sambac, sandalwood and vanilla, making it creamier, more floral and warmer.

What does Blue Talisman smell like after four hours?

After a few hours, according to the community, clean musk, light woods and Ambrofix dominate: a woody-mineral skin scent. At this point the Extrait smells noticeably warmer, of sandalwood and vanilla.

Who created Blue Talisman?

Both versions were created by perfumer Jordi Fernández (Givaudan). The Eau de Parfum was released in 2023 for Ex Nihilo’s tenth anniversary, the Extrait in 2025.

Is Blue Talisman a women’s or men’s fragrance?

Ex Nihilo presents Blue Talisman as a unisex fragrance. Because of the jasmine and vanilla, some find the Extrait slightly more feminine, but it is also worn by both men and women.

When should you wear Blue Talisman, and when the Extrait?

The Eau de Parfum suits daytime, the office, travel, spring and summer. The Extrait shows its strengths in the evening, at celebrations and in the cooler months.
