Pana Dora Sweden: niche perfumes between the Orient and Småland
A perfumer from Syria, a small town in the forests of Småland and a kingdom of glass right next door. It sounds like the opening of a Scandinavian novel, but it is the story of Pana Dora Sweden. The niche house from Emmaboda brings together the scent culture of the Orient and the smell of Swedish forests, and that very mix is what makes it so exciting.
- Pana Dora Sweden is a niche perfume house from Emmaboda in southern Sweden.
- Its founder is Syrian-Swedish perfumer Ibrahim Al-Zouabi, who came to Sweden in 1988 and has more than 30 years of experience with major international houses.
- The idea: rare raw materials from East and West, combined with Swedish nature, from forests to wild flowers.
- At 4D OUTFITTERS you will find a large selection of the collection online and in our boutique in Bregenz.
From the Orient to Småland: the founder
Ibrahim Al-Zouabi emigrated from Syria to Sweden in 1988. His fragrance journey began in 1990. Since then, by his own account, he has travelled the globe in search of rare raw materials and spent more than three decades working as a perfumer for major international companies.
With Pana Dora he finally settled in Emmaboda, a small town in Kalmar County. This is where fragrances are created that aim to do justice to both East and West: the depth of oud, amber and resins meets the cool, green light of the North.
What makes Pana Dora special
Raw materials come first. Every composition starts with the materials, and the brand makes a point of being open about the ingredients it uses.
Sweden as inspiration. Forests, lakes and rare flowers are the common thread. Scents such as Swedish Wood, Swedish Leather and Scandic say so in their names.
A bottle with antlers. Each bottle is crowned with a stag’s head, a nod to the animals of the Swedish forests. On the shelf you recognise them instantly.
Names with a story
With Pana Dora it pays to look at the names:
- Kropp & Själ is Swedish for “body & soul”.
- Skadi is the Norse goddess of winter, mountains, bowhunting and skiing.
- Dux Orientis is Latin for “leader of the East”, a nod to the founder’s Oriental roots.
- Oud Republic is dedicated to the precious wood that has played a leading role in Arabian perfumery for centuries.
Curiosities around Pana Dora
Things you probably didn’t know
- In the middle of the Kingdom of Glass
Emmaboda lies in “Glasriket”, Småland’s glass region. The municipality is home to the glassworks of Johansfors, Åfors and Boda. Boda is one half of the famous name Kosta Boda.
- An immigrant in the land of emigrants
Vilhelm Moberg, author of the novel series “The Emigrants”, was born on a farm near Emmaboda in 1898. He told the story of Swedes leaving for America. Today an immigrant from Syria runs a perfume house here.
- An ABBA musical from next door
The village of Duvemåla from Moberg’s novels lies in Emmaboda municipality. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA turned the story into the musical “Kristina från Duvemåla”, which premiered in Malmö in 1995.
- A goddess who chose by the feet
The Skadi myth is delightfully odd: according to the Prose Edda she was allowed to choose a husband from among the gods, but could only see their feet. She hoped for handsome Baldr and ended up with Njörðr, god of the sea.
- Rebellion in the forests
Around Emmaboda, the peasant leader Nils Dacke organised his 16th-century uprising against King Gustav Vasa. The dense forests that inspire perfumes today were his hiding place back then.
