Jewellery that lasts:giving real gold and diamonds

Flex-Tennisarmband aus Gelbgold, Memoire-Ring und Diamant-Ohrstecker auf hellem Grund, daneben Schmuck am Handgelenk und am Ohr
At a glance

Why real gold lasts, what 585 and 750 mean and which diamond classics make a good gift: tennis bracelet, stud earrings, eternity ring and fine entry pieces.

Perfume runs out eventually, and the chocolates are gone by Boxing Day at the latest. A ring in 18 carat gold will still be around in fifty years – and perhaps worn by someone who has not even been born yet. That is what this gift guide is about: real gold jewellery that lasts. We explain what 585 and 750 mean, which three diamond classics have worked for decades, where to start on a smaller budget and how to get the size right without giving the surprise away.

In short
  • Real gold lasts: gold barely reacts with air and water, which is why it does not rust. Almost half of all gold ever mined exists today as jewellery.
  • 14 or 18 carat: 585 means 585 parts gold per 1,000, 750 means 750. The number is stamped into the piece as a hallmark.
  • The three diamond classics: tennis bracelet, stud earrings and eternity ring. They suit almost any style and are rarely left in the drawer.
  • Starting with real gold: delicate bracelets and stud earrings by Leaf are a lovely way to start, and adjustable bracelets solve the size problem.
  • Finding the size secretly: we have dedicated guides for rings and necklaces, linked below.

Why is real gold jewellery a gift that lasts?

Because gold is one of the least reactive metals there is. It does not rust and keeps its shine, which is why archaeologists find gold jewellery that looks almost new after thousands of years in the ground. A scratch can be polished out, a chain repaired, a ring resized. Hardly any other gift survives so many stages of life.

The World Gold Council has calculated how much gold humanity has taken out of the ground in total: around 222,600 tonnes as of mid-2026. Cast into a cube, it would measure only about 22.6 metres on each side. Around 45 percent of it, close to 99,700 tonnes, is not sitting in vaults but in jewellery boxes and on wrists. Gold is, above all, worn.

And it is being bought more thoughtfully. According to the World Gold Council, jewellery demand in Europe fell by around ten percent by weight in the second quarter of 2026, and worldwide many buyers turned to lighter pieces. That matches what we see in our boutique: better one fine piece that is worn every day than a heavy one that only comes out on New Year's Eve.

14 or 18 carat: what does the number in the jewellery mean?

It tells you how much pure gold is inside. 18 carat equals 750 per mille, i.e. 750 parts gold per 1,000. 14 carat equals 585 per mille. The rest are metals such as silver, copper or palladium, which determine colour and hardness. That is why yellow, white and rose gold exist with the same fineness. Which gold colour suits whom is explained in our article Yellow, white or rose gold.

585 – 14 carat

A little harder and more robust for everyday wear, ideal for fine chains and pieces worn daily. In our shop, for example, many pieces by Leaf.

750 – 18 carat

More gold, a richer colour, the classic of fine jewellery. The diamond pieces from our 4D Fine Jewellery collection in this article are all made of 18 carat gold.

Where the number is stamped and what the small marks next to it mean is explained in Hallmarks in gold jewellery: what 750 and co. really mean.

Which diamond jewellery makes a timeless gift?

Tennis bracelet, stud earrings and eternity ring. These three forms have been in demand for decades because they go with jeans as well as with an evening dress. The idea that diamonds are a gift for eternity is, by the way, also an advertising success: copywriter Frances Gerety of the agency N. W. Ayer wrote the line “A diamond is forever” for De Beers, which Advertising Age later named the slogan of the 20th century. The 2026 holiday campaign under that very name once again puts stud earrings, tennis bracelets and eternity rings centre stage, and it kicked off with the tennis bracelet at the US Open.

The tennis bracelet: classic chain or flex?

The classic tennis bracelet lies softly like a ribbon and closes with a box clasp. The flex bracelet is a flexibly set bangle with a titanium spring that sits round on the wrist and pairs well with a watch. Where the name comes from and how to recognise quality is explained in detail in Tennis bracelet: what really matters when buying.

Two of our flex bracelets make a nice lesson: both carry exactly 79 brilliant-cut diamonds. The yellow gold one comes to 1.42 carats, the white gold one to 2.64 carats. Same number of stones, almost double the weight – so each stone on the white gold model is noticeably larger and looks bolder. The tennis bracelet 5E492W, in turn, is a little lesson in diamond cuts for your wrist: marquise, emerald cut, oval, pear and brilliant, 95 diamonds in five shapes.

All in 18 carat gold, details according to the product description, prices incl. VAT live from our shop, as of 28 Oct 2026.

Stud earrings: the gift without size risk

Stud earrings are perhaps the safest diamond purchase: no ring size, no chain length, and they get worn on perfectly ordinary Tuesdays. A tip from our consultations: check whether the person usually wears yellow or white gold, and stick with it. Baguette diamonds with their straight edges look graphic and modern, a combination of marquise and brilliant more playful.

18 carat gold, diamonds in TW/si, prices incl. VAT live, as of 28 Oct 2026.

The eternity ring: stones to the horizon

An eternity ring, called a Memoire ring in German-speaking countries, carries a row of identically cut stones. If they run only across the front, it is called a half eternity; if they run all the way round, a full eternity. Rings of this kind with paste stones or white topaz existed as early as the 18th century; as a diamond ring for anniversaries, De Beers made the idea popular in the 1960s.

If you prefer something more playful than a strict row, take a look at our ring 1AP18W: its 26 brilliant-cut diamonds sit in small clusters on an intertwined band, like dew on a vine. The eternity ring GIA Premium, by contrast, is the classic for the really big moments: 19 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 3.83 carats, and every single stone comes with its own report from the Gemological Institute of America. Good to know: full eternity rings can hardly be resized because there are stones all the way round. Here it is especially worth knowing the size beforehand.

Ring 1AP18W in sizes 54, 56 and 58, eternity ring GIA Premium in size 55. Prices incl. VAT live, as of 28 Oct 2026.

Real gold on a smaller budget: where to start?

With fine pieces that are worn every day. The bracelets by Leaf are ideal for this: delicate, in 14 or 18 carat gold, with small diamonds and usually adjustable in length. The Eternal Touch, for example, adapts between about 15.5 and 17.5 centimetres, which practically solves the size problem. If you are looking for a first necklace, the Stars necklace is a fine piece with 63 brilliant-cut diamonds.

Prices incl. VAT live from our shop, as of 28 Oct 2026. More pieces in the Leaf and 4D Fine Jewellery collections.

Jewellery in Fairmined gold, made in a small family workshop near Pforzheim, is covered in our own guide Noën jewellery for Christmas: gift ideas in fair gold. And for ideas under 150 euros, beyond jewellery too, take a look at Gifts under 50, 100 and 150 €.

How can I tell real gold and natural diamonds?

By the hallmark and the certificate. Real gold carries its fineness as a number, i.e. 585 or 750. For diamonds, the rules of the World Jewellery Confederation CIBJO apply: if only “diamond” is written without any addition, a natural diamond is meant. Laboratory-grown stones must be clearly disclosed, for example as “synthetic” or “laboratory-grown”. The pieces from our 4D Fine Jewellery collection in this article come with a certificate stating the weight, colour and clarity of the stones.

What abbreviations such as TW, si or vsi mean is explained in TW-si, vsi, brilliant: what the diamond abbreviations mean. And why a diamond scratches other jewellery but is still not indestructible is covered in Gemstone hardness: which stone can handle everyday life?.

How do I find the right size without giving the surprise away?

For stud earrings and adjustable bracelets, not at all – that is their big advantage. For rings, a few tricks help, such as using a ring the person already wears as a template. All methods are in Finding a ring size secretly. For necklaces and chains, Necklace length: which necklace suits you? explains where each length ends on the neckline.

Frequently asked questions about jewellery as a gift
