Myth or truth?
Statement 1
Coriander seeds are seeds in the botanical sense.
Myth. What is sold as coriander seed is the dried fruit of the plant – and it is from these fruits that the oil for perfume is distilled.
Statement 2
For the oil, the fruits are crushed only shortly before distillation.
True. Crushed fruits quickly lose volatile scent molecules. How finely they are crushed also affects the yield and composition of the oil.
Statement 3
Coriander oil smells like the fresh coriander herb.
Myth. The oil of the fruits is shaped by linalool and smells peppery, citrusy and floral. In the herb, quite different substances determine the scent.

How is coriander oil for perfume obtained?
By steam distillation of the ripe, dried fruits. They are crushed only shortly before distillation so that the volatile scent molecules do not escape beforehand.
Does coriander in perfume smell like the fresh herb?
No. Perfumery uses the oil of the fruits, not of the leaves. In the herb, quite different substances shape the scent, whereas linalool dominates the oil of the fruits. That is why coriander oil smells peppery, slightly citrusy and floral rather than green.
How long does coriander last on the skin?
Coriander sits between the top and heart notes: at first it feels peppery and citrusy, then its softer, floral side comes through. In this way it links the fresh opening with the heart of a fragrance. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
