Knowledge

Limonene and a touch of anthranilate: the molecules of mandarin

The mandarin (Citrus reticulata) comes from southern China; particularly prized oil for perfumery comes from Italy, above all Sicily and Calabria. The oil sits in tiny glands in the peel and is cold-pressed without heat. Whether it turns out green, yellow or red depends solely on the time of harvest: early fruit gives a tart green oil, ripe fruit a sweeter, rounder one. Its main components are limonene (C₁₀H₁₆) and γ-terpinene (C₁₀H₁₆); the delicate, almost floral tone comes from a touch of methyl N-methylanthranilate (C₉H₁₁NO₂).

In a fragrance, mandarin is the sunny opening: juicy, sweet and softer than lemon or bergamot. It almost always sits in the top note. With bergamot and neroli it feels radiant and fresh, with jasmine and orange blossom bright and floral, with vanilla and patchouli warm and round.

In this selection, mandarin is part of the fragrance pyramid – usually the first impression you notice when you spray.

How the note behaves

Sparkling & bright

Mandarin with bergamot, neroli or green notes. Fresh, radiant and easy to wear by day.

Floral & sunny

With jasmine, orange blossom or magnolia. Bright, feminine and cheerful.

Sweet & warm

With vanilla, patchouli or amber. The freshness fades softly into a warm base.

Curious factWhen fine droplets spray out as you peel a mandarin, that is pure essential oil from the glands in the peel – exactly the oil used in perfume.

Knowledge to share

Myth or truth?

1 / 3

Statement 1

Green mandarin oil comes from a separate green variety.

MYTH

Myth. It is the same fruit, just harvested earlier – ripeness decides between green, yellow and red.

Statement 2

Mandarin and clementine are the same thing.

MYTH

Myth. The clementine is a cross between mandarin and orange – the mandarin's daughter, not its twin.

Statement 3

Mandarin oil comes from the peel, not the juice.

TRUTH

True. The oil sits in tiny glands in the peel and is cold-pressed out.

Frequently asked questions

How does mandarin differ from orange and lemon in perfume?

Mandarin is sweeter and softer than lemon and more delicate than orange. A touch of methyl N-methylanthranilate gives it an almost floral tone that other citrus fruits lack.

What are green, yellow and red mandarin?

It is always the same fruit, just harvested at different ripeness. Green oil from early fruit is tart and fresh, red oil from ripe fruit sweet and round.

How long does mandarin last on the skin?

As a top note it shows mainly in the first minutes. Then the heart and base notes take over; with vanilla, musk or woods, a hint of the sunny freshness lingers longer. It is best to test on your own skin: with every bottle from 30 ml we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
