Myth or truth?
Statement 1
The orange scent comes from limonene alone.
Myth. Limonene makes up more than 90 % of the oil, but the typical character comes from aldehydes such as octanal and decanal – in small amounts.
Statement 2
Orange oil for perfume mostly comes from juice production.
True. The oil is obtained from the peel without heat when the fruit is pressed and is mostly a by-product of juice production.
Statement 3
Sweet orange oil is as light-sensitive as bitter orange oil.
Myth. Cold-pressed bitter orange oil is phototoxic and restricted by IFRA; sweet orange oil is not considered phototoxic, even when cold-pressed.

How is orange oil for perfume obtained?
By cold pressing the peel: the oil is obtained without heat, usually right when the fruit is pressed for juice. Orange oil is therefore mostly a by-product of juice production.
What is the difference between orange and bitter orange?
The orange in perfume is usually the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). The bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) is a separate species; neroli is obtained from its blossoms. Its cold-pressed peel oil is phototoxic and restricted by IFRA – sweet orange oil, by contrast, is not considered phototoxic.
How long does orange last on the skin?
Orange is a typical top note and fades comparatively quickly, as its main constituent, limonene, is highly volatile. It stays noticeable for longer when warmer notes support it. The best test is on your own skin: with every bottle of 30 ml or more we include a 2 ml sample of the same fragrance.
