Alexandre.J: A Fragrance Work of Art in a Class of Its Own

Some bottles end up in the bathroom. Those by Alexandre.J are more likely to end up in a display cabinet. Peacocks, scarabs, butterflies, golden ornaments: the French brand turns perfume into small sculptures and, along the way, tells the story of two of the most beautiful eras in design history, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

In short
  • Alexandre.J is a French luxury perfume brand, founded in 2012 by the artist and designer Alexandre J.
  • The Art Nouveau Collection (since 2022) pays tribute to Art Nouveau and the Belle Époque, the Art Deco Collection to the Roaring Twenties.
  • The bottles are elaborately crafted objects; according to the product information, the Art Nouveau fragrances have a perfume oil concentration of 22 per cent.
  • At 4D OUTFITTERS you will find Imperial Peacock, Black Beetle, Butterfly and The Majestic Oud, among others.

Who is behind Alexandre.J?

The eponymous brand was launched in 2012 by the French artist and designer Alexandre J. The vision: a universe that celebrates the beauty of objects and raw materials. Working with perfumers, artists and craftspeople, the house creates fragrances in which the juice and the bottle get equal attention.

Alexandre.J deliberately chooses opulence over minimalism. Every collection starts with a story, often drawn from art and architecture, which is then translated into scent and design. According to the brand, the perfumes are made in France.

The Art Nouveau Collection: Art Nouveau you can spray on

With the Art Nouveau Collection, Alexandre.J reinvents the perfume of the Belle Époque. The line launched in 2022 with five eaux de parfum; further fragrances such as Butterfly followed later. The first scents were composed by perfumers including Vanina Muracciole. The collection is also sold at the London department store Harrods.

Each fragrance carries an Art Nouveau motif in its name and on its bottle:

  • Imperial Peacock: the peacock, Art Nouveau's favourite animal, with golden details.
  • Black Beetle: fresh and woody, a tribute to the fantastical insect motifs of Art Nouveau jewellery.
  • Butterfly: gently curving lines, as graceful as a butterfly's wing.
  • Majestic Nard: dedicated to the lion, built around precious spikenard.
  • Ode to Rose: a lavishly sensual declaration of love to the rose.
  • Oriental Enigma: a tribute to mysticism and splendour.

The bottles are made of hand-chased, sculpted glass and close with a magnetic cap. No wonder nobody likes throwing them away after the last spray.

The Art Deco Collection: the Roaring Twenties in a bottle

The Art Deco Collection is a tribute to the 1920s, to jazz, cabaret and the glamour of the Golden Twenties. The bottles of its six fragrances share one design in different colours: openwork patterns reminiscent of veils, and golden geometric ornaments.

From this line we carry The Majestic Oud: fruity and woody, built around rich oud.

Curiosities about Alexandre.J

What you probably didn't know

  1. In the Twenties, "Art Deco" wasn't called that yet

The name goes back to the 1925 Paris applied arts exhibition, the "Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes". The term "Art Deco" only appeared in print in 1966, however, and became popular in 1968 thanks to a book by the historian Bevis Hillier.

  2. A peacock as a bone of contention

In 1876/77 the painter James McNeill Whistler decorated the famous "Peacock Room" in the London home of shipowner Frederick Leyland. After a quarrel over his fee, Whistler painted two fighting peacocks on the wall, said to represent himself and his patron. The title: "Art and Money". The room is now in the Freer Gallery in Washington.

  3. When perfume bottles became art

In 1908 the Art Nouveau artist René Lalique designed a label for François Coty's fragrance L'Effleurt, followed in 1912 by a bottle of his own with two cicadas on the stopper. The collaboration with Coty became the springboard for Lalique's career as a glass artist.

  4. Spikenard: a scent with a biblical past

Spikenard, which gives Majestic Nard its name, comes from the Himalayan plant Nardostachys jatamansi. Precious spikenard oil is already mentioned in the Song of Songs and in the Gospels. In the Gospel of John, Mary anoints Jesus's feet with it.
