SORA DORA Perfume: From the Mines to Grasse

A farmer's son from Portugal, a coal mine in Provence and a jasmine grower from Grasse: the story behind SORA DORA reads like a novel – and the fragrances smell just as rich. At 4D OUTFITTERS in Bregenz, this French perfume house is one of the brands we love telling stories about.

In short
  • SORA DORA is a French niche perfume house named after Antoine Soradora, a Portuguese immigrant born in 1902.
  • The first collection under the name appeared in 2021; today there is the Collection Universelle, the Collection Irreel and, with "Red", a collaboration with Jovoy Paris.
  • The fragrances are composed by perfumers such as Margaux Le Paih-Guérin, Amélie Bourgeois, Anne-Sophie Behaghel and Camille Chemardin.
  • At 4D OUTFITTERS you'll find them online and in our boutique in Bregenz – and with the discovery set you can test them all at once.

Antoine Soradora: from a farm in Loulé …

This is how the house tells its founding story: Antoine Soradora is born on a scorching July day in 1902 in Loulé, in the south of Portugal. His life revolves around farming and church – every Sunday he accompanies his devout parents to Mass, and everyone already sees the future priest in him.

But Antoine has another passion: smells. Wild lavender by the roadside, wet earth after rain, peat and hay, freshly cut spring grass, ripe fruit and blossom – he collects scents the way other people collect stamps.

… to the coal mines of Provence …

In 1920, aged 18, his friend Sandro tells him that France is looking for foreign workers for its mines. Antoine doesn't hesitate for long. He leaves his homeland and ends up in Gréasque, a village in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, right in the middle of the Gardanne coalfield.

A French family takes him in and gives him a small hut at the edge of their garden. To thank them, Antoine turns the neglected plot into a blooming garden of flowers, fruit trees and aromatic plants. By day he works underground; every free minute he spends in the garden.

… to Grasse, the world capital of perfume

Exploring the region, Antoine falls in love with Grasse. There he meets Etienne, a tall, slender jasmine grower twenty years his senior, with a childlike curiosity and a deep love of plants. Their shared passion for flowers bonds them at once – and soon they are experimenting with perfumes together. The money from jasmine growing goes into the finest raw materials.

After Etienne's death, Antoine runs the workshop alone and creates his first perfume of his own just one year later. In a bar in Aix-en-Provence he meets Rose, a woman from Gréasque. They marry and have three daughters, to whom Antoine passes on his knowledge and his exacting standards.

SORA DORA today

Today SORA DORA bears the name of its brave founder and sees itself as a family house in its fourth generation. The first collection appeared in 2021: each fragrance captures a stage of Antoine's journey – from the hills of Portugal to the gardens of Provence.

Collection Universelle: the fragrances around Antoine's life story, such as Gladiator, Kamel Oud, the almond homage Mandorle, Vanuatu and Gréasque, named after the village where it all began.

Collection Irreel: the more playful, imaginative line with fragrances such as Lü Bu, Jany, Mallow and 7.

Collection Privée: Red, created together with Jovoy Paris.

Curiosities about SORA DORA

What you probably didn't know

  1. A decree from Vienna

Coal mining in Gréasque goes back to Napoleon: an imperial decree signed at Schönbrunn in 1809 granted coal-mining concessions. The Puits Hély d'Oissel pithead has been a listed historic monument since 1989 and now houses a mining museum.

  2. Jany, Claudie and Marie-Rose

According to Parfumo, these were the names of the founder's three daughters. You'll find the name Jany on a bottle today, too: Jany is one of the fragrances in the Collection Irreel.

  3. Perfume as world heritage

What Etienne and Antoine did in Grasse is officially part of humanity's cultural heritage: in 2018 UNESCO added the perfume skills of the Pays de Grasse – from growing perfume plants to composition – to its list of intangible cultural heritage.

  4. Snow made of almond blossom

Antoine's home region, the Algarve, is famous for its almond trees. Legend has it that a Moorish king had them planted for his Nordic bride, who longed for snow – in February the white blossom covered the land. A lovely thought to have when you wear Mandorle.

  5. The wizard's forest

Brocéliande is the legendary forest of the Arthurian tales: this is where the fairy Viviane is said to have imprisoned the wizard Merlin forever. Today it is usually identified with the forest of Paimpont in Brittany.
